The small pool erupted almost immediately, blue liquid surging upward and spilling over the edges.

Cecelia stepped back quickly, but when her foot came down, the ground beneath it felt solid and unyielding, like concrete.

Her attention, however, was already elsewhere.

The fluid spread with alarming speed.

Her little patch of grass was expanding outward, the green creeping across new ground.

Ginger stared, utterly transfixed.

Then, curiosity started getting the better of her. She darted off, chasing the leading edge of the flow.

Cecelia lost sight of her in moments.

She didn’t know how much time passed before the flow finally slowed.

The level began to drop, sinking steadily until it was flush with the ground.

When she looked again, Cecilia realized the tiny pond that once sat in the middle of her space had transformed into a wide circular pool, at least 30 feet across.

She stood at its edge, the fluid lapping at the rim.

Curious, she crouched and reached in, feeling for the bottom.

Her hand found nothing.

The liquid climbed quickly up her legs until it reached her thighs.

With a pool this wide and this deep, three people could comfortably soak in it at the same time.

But that wasn’t all.

She lifted her head, peering into the distance. Was thata tree?

She climbed out of the pond and walked toward it.

There, standing alone, was a tree.

A dead one.

Its trunk was thick, requiring two adults to circle it with their arms.

The crown was nothing but bare branches; not a single leaf remained.

Meow!

Ginger came nearing toward her.

Or more accurately, sprinting toward the tree.

In a flash, the little cat scrambled up the trunk, claws finding purchase on the rough bark, until she perched on one of the highest branches.

Cecilia stepped back to get a better look.

dging from the height, the tree had to be at least 15 to 16 feet tall.

om its skeletal form, she couldn’t tell what species it had been.

Maybe I’ll find out after the next upgrade.

angely enough, she wasn’t bothered by the mystery.

If anything, she felt a quiet excitement.

Every time the space evolved, it revealed something new. Where it might eventually lead was impossible to predict.

She wandered further, exploring.

The grassy area had tripled in size.

Ginger had already marked out her territory, a perimeter of cat litter enclosing the pile of supplies she’d dumped earlier.

When she saw Cecelia approaching, she gave a few cheerful meows and, in a display of remarkable generosity, regurgitated two instant noodle cups and five whole chicken legs,

Cecelia’s eyes narrowed. A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. She scratched under Ginger’s chin. You know, since you’re living in my space now, don’t you think you should

Ginger tilted her head, bewildered. Meow?

A moment passed. Then understanding seemed to dawn.

The cat shook its fur, stretched luxuriously, and padded over to a patch of empty grass.

With a series of small, productive heaves, she deposited a veritable cornucopia onto the ground.

Roasted chicken, hot dogs, mushroom grits, granola bars, potato chips, candy, canned peaches, more instant noodles, bread the list went on. There were even two dozen large jugs of water.

Cecelia surveyed the pile with genuine admiration. Ginger, you really understand what people need.

The orange cat lifted its chin proudly, as if the compliment were only natural.

Cecelia scratched under her chin again. So, how big is your space? Is there more? Why don’t you bring it all out, and I’ll help you take stock?

Meow

Ginger’s voice was soft. She wagged her tail, then looked pointedly at her new territory and the pile of food before shaking her head. That was it. Her space was full.

All right,” Cecelia said with a smile.

You know, this stuff isn’t really enough for rent. I’m giving you a safe place to live, after all. And in this world, we both want to survive. So the best thing we can do is work together. As long as I’m alive, you can stay here forever. Sound good?

Meow!

Ginger answered with surprising seriousness.

Its fluffy face and wide amber eyes were practically glowing with anticipation.

Clearly a house cat at heart.

The kind that preferred staying indoors.

Probably the sort that could be won over with a single squeezetube treat.

She suppressed a small sigh. Cat ethics aside, she pressed on with her pitch. So, here’s what I’m thinking. I need you to help me move things in and out of the space. Supplies I need. Think you can do that?

She had already tested it earlier.

The items Ginger brought into the space couldn’t be taken out directly by her.

Ginger was the necessary intermediary.

Which meant, for now, convincing the little creature was essential.

Ginger sat quietly for a moment, as if truly thinking it through.

Cecelia waited patiently, tossing bits of fluid to her hens and chicks while she watched the little cat ponder.

After about two minutes, Ginger finally stood up and padded toward her and meowed.

Cecilia raised an eyebrow. Do we have a deal?

Ginger nodded.
