Ginger drank more than Cecilia expected.
Before long, the level of the pool had dropped by nearly three inches.

Yet the cat’s belly showed no sign of swelling. It remained slim and flat, as if the liquid had vanished somewhere else entirely.
“Does it all go straight into your space?”
Cecelia asked, scratching the top of Ginger’s head.
Ginger just hummed contentedly, offering no clear answer.
But the blissful squint of her eyes as Cecelia’s fingers worked through her fur said everything.

mal?”
e pleased little sound was confirmation enough. Ginger sat back on her haunches and fixed ecelia with an expectant look, as if to say, You wanted my help? I’m ready. Let’s hear it.
The deal between them had already been struck.
Ginger had clearly decided to put down roots here. And why wouldn’t she?
Beyond the safety, that pool of fluid was pure nourishment for her.
With this, she’d never have to choke down another disgusting crystal again.
Hauling a few things in and out was nothing.
Every thought was written plainly on the cat’s face.
Cecelia bit back a smile. “All right then. I won’t hold back.
“But before we head out, I should probably bath you. Once you grow back to your original size, that’ll be a lot harder.”
“Meow!”

Knock. Knock.
The sound came just as Cecilia stepped out of the bathroom with the freshly washed orange c
in her arms.
“Ivy? What’s wrong?”
“Cece…”
Ivy stopped mid–sentence, her eyes landing on the small orange cat in Cecelia’s arms. “Where did you get a cat?”
Cecelia grinned.
“Come back to my room. I want to show you a magic trick.”
inside, she turned to her bewildered sister. She stroked Ginger’s head, a silent signal.
atched, utterly confused, as her sister spoke to the cat. Then the little creature opened its ath and, with a small heave, regurgitated a cardboard box onto the floor.
‘s eyes widened instantly. “Did… Did the cat just… throw that up?”
“Pretty cool, right?”
Cecilia said, still absentmindedly petting the cat. “This is the level 4 mutated cat I told you about. The one that fought the giant snake.”
“What?!”
Ivy’s hand flew to her mouth. She sucked in a sharp breath, staring at the cat in her sister’s arms. “This is the level 4 mutated beast?”
“Meow.”
Ginger’s reply was instant. She turned her big, innocent eyes on Ivy and blinked slowly, laying on the charm.
Ivy stood there, completely stunned.
She couldn’t reconcile this tiny, docile creature with the terrifying beast that had battled a giant python.
Especially when said beast was purring contentedly in her sister’s arm.

It showed no hostility at all.
It made no sense.

Apparently, the revelation that this was a level 4 mutant cat was even more staggering than the fact that she had some kind of storage ability.
“In any case,” Cecilia continued, “it’s joining our team from now on. ‘Ginger‘ sounds a little ordinary, though. How about we call you “Tiger‘ instead?”
She lifted the cat slightly and held it at eye level. “What do you think?”
“Meow!”
The lilting response was answer enough.
She had no objections.
Ivy was still struggling to process. “She… Tiger understands you?”
“Seems so. level 4 mutants have some intelligence. About on par with a young child, I think.”
“I see… Should we tell Amber and Jerome about Tiger?”
Ivy took a moment to absorb this. Inside, her thoughts were racing. My sister tamed a level 4 mutant! Of course she did. Only Cece can do it.
The look she gave Cecelia was warm with pride.
“Definitely. If Tiger’s joining us, everyone should know.”
Cecelia squirmed under Ivy’s look.
God, I can’t do this.
It felt like coming home from kindergarten with a gold star and being told what a good girl she
