Chapter 199 A Battle in the Early Dark
Unfortunately, they still hadn’t encountered a single level 3 mutated zombie.
“Alright, let’s eat first. Timothy said he wants to discuss the night watch after dinner.”
Ivy York said, serving hot bowls of mushroom grits for everyone.

Cecelia murmured an acknowledgment and went to tap on the car window to rouse Jerome. She found him already asleep inside.
“Damn. He’s exhausted, huh?”
She tapped on the glass again. A moment later, Jerome stirred. His eyes opened slowly, the corners faintly red, still clouded with sleep. He lowered the window and looked at her through that lingering haze. “Cecelia?”
His voice carried the rough edge of someone freshly awake.
Cecelia glanced at him and cleared her throat lightly. “Come down and eat first.”
“Okay…”
The reply was listless, subdued.
The mind–reading ability was a burden Jerome couldn’t control.
Draining his energy left his frail body aching with fatigue.
He’d come back to the car to rest, hoping to replenish a little, but it hadn’t helped much.
The only real solution was to kill some zombies, take their crystals, and level up.
He needed to turn this passive
curse into something he could actually manage. Fast.
After both teams finished dinner, night had fully fallen.
Yet, zombies continued to wander toward the gas station from every direc

After discussing it with Cecelia, Timothy organized the group. The vehicles were repositioned so the night watch could remain on the cargo truck and monitor the surroundings. Everyone else would move inside the gas station to rest with the lights extinguished.
Ordinary zombies were drawn to sound and light.
Mutated ones,
Cven more so.
In just a few hours, they had already eliminated

Mostly level 1 zombies, with the occasional level 2.
Everyone except Ivy, Jerome, and Regina would take turns on watch, paired up.
Seven of them, rotating through the night.
“Grrgh…”
The moans never really stopped.
With Regina’s psychic barrier down, the watchmen on the truck watched the wandering dead multiply.
Fortunately, Cecelia had anticipated this. Earlier, she’d had Amber and Oliver scavenge discarded truck panels from nearby wrecks. They’d rigged a makeshift barrier around the rest area. Nothing fancy, but enough to channel the flow, make the zombies bump and turn.
The big rig parked in front of the gas station was the final wall.
The people resting inside were able to sleep with relative peace.
Until…
Bang!
The impact rattled the metal barricade at four in the morning.
Matthew jolted awake on top of the truck and looked down to see Oliver already locked in combat with a level 3 mutated zombie.
Matthew sucked in a breath.
Before he could move to help, Oliver had the thing’s head pinned to the ground and was grinding its face into the asphalt.
Literally grinding.
In seconds, a whole slab of rotting flesh had scraped away.
Matthew swallowed hard. The level 3 mutated zombie’s enraged roar split the night, and in the distance, another one was charging toward them.
Inside the building, Regina had already awakened.
She quickly shook Timothy and Hendrick. “Two level 3 mutated zombies just showed up outside!”
They were on their feet and moving before she finished speaking.
Cecelia yawned.
Since gaining access to the blank space and absorbing that mysterious cobalt fluid, her need for sleep in the real world had drastically decreased.
Whenever she truly needed rest, she could simply enter the space and sleep there for eight hours. The

result felt exactly the same.
As for the mechanism behind it, she had no idea.
She heard Regina’s voice from inside the space, opened her eyes, glanced at Ivy and Amber weeping then at Jerome in the corner. Unhurried, she got up and walked to the door to observe.
Oliver had the first mutated zombie pinned. After a few exchanges, the cleaver Amber had lent hirm care down, severing the creature’s head.
Nearby. Timothy and Hendrick were locked in a brutal dance with the other mutated zombie.
By the time Oliver brought the first crystal to Cecelia, they were still struggling
