Chapter 3
And now he wanted me to deliver it to Kaven myself. Lydia was already snarling in my head, demanding that I
tear that bitch and her bastard mate to pieces.
I met Wayne’s eyes, cold and steady, took in the entitled look on his face, then gave a single nod. “Fine,
Alpha. I’ll have it sent to her tomorrow.”
Wayne studied me for a long moment before turning and walking out. Through the door, I heard his voice turn soft and soothing as he murmured to Kaven.
Every sound made it painfully easy to picture what they were doing. I heard laughter, footsteps, then the
sickeningly wet smack of lips.
A low moan jerked me back to reality. I’d dug my claws into my palms without even realizing it.
Blood ran down my palms and soaked into the white cashmere carpet in dark red stains. I walked to my desk
and dragged my bloodied fingers across the calendar, slashing a harsh red X over today’s date.
Victor would be here in two days. I stripped off the ruined gown and headed for the bathroom.
Warm water streamed over my skin as I stared at my pale, hollow reflection.
Wayne, you dragged me out of Silver Mist Forest seven years ago and gave me a second chance. For seven
years, I’d taken blades for you, cleaned up your messes, and kept your pack running.
Whatever debt there was between us had been paid in full.
The next morning, I sent the maids to Kaven’s room with the dress. She’d left the door wide open, on purpose.
As I passed, I saw her twirling in front of the mirror, the gown hanging off her like an ill-fitting costume. She grabbed a pair of scissors and hacked off the diamond trim at the hem.
“God, this style is ancient. It’ll look better shorter.”
The maids saw me in the doorway and fell silent. I kept walking toward the kitchen.
Wayne had drunk too much the night before. The curse he’d survived years ago had left him with a chronic, burning agony in his gut. When it flared up, my blood was the only thing that eased it.
I took out a small blade and sliced it across my wrist, letting the blood drip into the simmering pot. Red
swirled through the tonic, then disappeared. For seven years, I’d been making this medicinal brew with my
own blood, because it was the only thing that eased his pain. This would be the last time.
I poured the brew into an insulated carafe and took it to his study. The study door stood half-open. I could
hear Wayne talking to Ethan.
I reached for the door, then Ethan’s voice stopped me cold. “Wayne, don’t you think you’ve gone too far? First
the ring, then the necklace, now the dress. Are you trying to drive her away? She’s been loyal to you for seven
years. She’d die for you.”

I went still. Wayne’s voice came next, cold and dismissive.
