Chapter 4
I grabbed the insulated carafe and headed down the hall. At the far end sat a rare Moongrass plant.
I tipped the carafe over and poured every drop of the medicinal brew I’d spent three hours making into the
soil. Kaven appeared behind me in the butchered dress.
She watched me pour out the brew, a smug smile spreading across her face. “Elise, Wayne says the lighting
in the Moon Goddess suite will be better for my recovery, so I’m moving in tonight. I assume you’ll clear
out?”
I’d lived in that room for five years. Every corner of it held pieces of our history.
I met her smug look with a nod. “I’ll pack now.”
I went back to the room and left everything behind, the jewelry, the designer bags, all of it. All I took was a
black duffel bag. I tossed in a few changes of clothes and my documents.
My phone buzzed with a message from Victor.
[We’ve already started wiping your pack registry. By morning, Elise will be gone.]
Lydia let out a satisfied little sound in my head. I zipped the bag and left without looking back.
My new room was a storage closet in the farthest wing of the house. The air smelled stale and damp. Lydia
kept making offended huffs.
I dropped the bag on the narrow bed and left everything else untouched. “Lydia, we just have to make it
through the next twelve hours. Then we’re done with this place.”
She fell silent.
By evening, heavy snow was falling. Wayne came back from the pack council with the cold clinging to him.
He stepped into the main hall and looked around, his expression darkening. One of the maids stepped
forward nervously.
“Alpha, she moved herself to the storage room in the north wing.”
Wayne’s jaw clenched. He stormed down the hall and drove his boot into the storage room door. It flew open
and slammed against the wall.
I’d been standing at the small window, watching the snow. I turned to face him.
He crossed the room in three strides, his gaze sweeping over the bare walls and exposed pipes before landing on the duffel bag.
“What the hell is this, Elise? Kaven wanted your room. That didn’t mean you had to move into a goddamn closet. Are you trying to play the martyr?”

I stood to meet his gaze. “Her scent is in every other room. This was the only space left. One room is the
same as any other.”
