Chapter 3
Tonight was the pack’s annual family banquet.
Julian had deliberately placed me behind Tyla’s chair, close enough to serve her, far enough to remind everyone exactly where I stood.
From the moment I stepped into the pack hall, I knew time was running out for me. Every second felt stolen. I
memorized Tyla’s face in silence, tracing the curve of her cheeks, the shape of her lashes, the stubborn tilt of
her chin. I wanted to burn her into my soul.
Apparently, I stared too long.
The sharp clang of silverware shattered the air.
Tyla slammed her utensils onto her plate. The entire dining hall went dead quiet.
She pointed straight at me, tears pooling instantly, her voice loud and shrill. “She’s creepy! That beggar keeps staring at me! I don’t want her here! Kick her out! Expel her from the pack! I never want to see her again!”
A few pack members shifted uncomfortably, but no one spoke.
Agnes slowly turned her gaze on me. Her eyes were dull with age but sharp with contempt.
“Julian,” she said coldly, “you refused to marry Serena, yet you insisted on bonding with some stray she-wolf who crawled in from nowhere. Did you really think dressing her up would make her worthy?”
Her voice hardened.
“Even if she doubled our territory. Even if she made us the most powerful pack on the continent. I would
never recognize her as your Luna.”
She never once looked directly at me.
She did not have to. Every word landed like a knife.
Inside me, my wolf surged forward, furious and violent. She wanted blood. She wanted to rip through the
room and paint the walls red.
I forced her back down.
“It wouldn’t matter,” I said softly.
Julian’s jaw tightened when he saw the look on my face. Guilt flickered in his eyes.
“Mother,” he said quietly, “if it weren’t for Wynne, I wouldn’t be alive.”
Years ago, he had hunted down a traitor himself and fallen off a cliff during the pursuit. I had been nearby. I had dragged him out before the river could claim him.
He lost part of his memory after the fall. When he woke, he had clung to my hand like I was the only thing

tethering him to this world.
That was how I stayed.
Agnes’s expression darkened. “You’re defending her against me?”
Her voice rose. “What about Serena? What about the child she’s carrying? Do you want your own blood born
illegitimate?”
Silence fell.
I looked at Julian.
He did not look back.
A faint, humorless smile touched my lips. I had expected nothing less.
Serena sent me pictures every day. Them tangled in silk sheets. Him kissing her shoulder. Her fingers laced
in his hair.
[Julian loves when I act spoiled.]
