Chapter 2
The SUV rolled to a stop in front of the pack house.
To my surprise, Julian came around and opened my door himself. He brushed his lips against my forehead.
“Serena doesn’t think before she speaks,” he said. “Ignore her.”
For a split second, my heart reacted the way it used to.
I nodded and headed toward the servants’ entrance.
Halfway there, I glanced back.
Julian’s hand rested possessively at Serena’s waist as they entered through the main doors.
The warmth in my chest evaporated.
I almost laughed at myself.
Inside the kitchen, the house manager grabbed my arm.
“What are you doing standing around? Alpha and Miss Serena are here. Start cooking.”
The other maids barely looked at me anymore. A few of them openly speculated about how much longer I
would last before Alpha replaced me officially.
My wolf stirred violently under my skin.
My hand tightened around the knife.
Then I remembered Tyla’s smile when she liked a dish.
I forced my wolf down.
“Mom!”
My heart jumped into my throat.
I turned.
Tyla ran past me.
Straight into Serena’s arms.
Just like last night.
Serena met my eyes over my daughter’s head.
Triumph.
“Mommy,” Tyla said loudly, pointing at me. “Why is she here? She looks dirty. Like a homeless person. Let’s

go somewhere else.”
Every word hit clean and sharp.
Two weeks ago, I arranged to see her in secret.
I gave her a scarf I knitted myself.
She threw it into the trash.
She said I embarrassed her.
She cried for her mom.
Pack patrol responded to the noise.
They assumed I was trying to abduct her.
I was stunned over a dozen times before Julian arrived and cleared things up.
Through all of it, Tyla never once reached for me.
My wolf howled inside my head.
[That’s our pup. Take her back.]
Before I realized what I was doing, I grabbed Tyla’s wrist.
She screamed.
Serena kicked me hard in the stomach.
“Don’t touch my daughter,” she snapped. “She hates you. Can’t you tell?”
My daughter.
She carried Tyla away.
I couldn’t move.
A few seconds later, Julian stormed into the kitchen.
He grabbed my wrist so tightly pain shot up my arm.
“Wynne,” he said coldly, “how many times do I have to tell you? Serena and I work together. That’s it. She
came here for dinner. What right do you have to hit her?”
“I didn’t,” I said. My voice broke.
His hand struck my face.
The sound echoed in the kitchen.

“Tyla saw you,” he said sharply. “She’s your daughter. Why would she lie to protect someone else?”
Across the room, Tyla stuck her tongue out at me and clutched Serena’s hand.
I carried her for eight years.
