Chapter 5

The fireworks were almost over before Julian remembered the promise he had made to Wynne.

He called Tyla over and crouched in front of her. His voice was gentle, almost careful.

“Go set off the last of the fireworks with your mom. She hasn’t been feeling great these past few days. Give

her a hug. Say the sweet things Daddy taught you, the ones that make her smile. She got you a gift too. I

promise you’ll love it.”

Tyla’s reaction was instant and vicious.

She ripped her hand free, her small face twisting as she bared her teeth. She ran straight behind Serena and

clung to her legs.

“That filthy beggar is not my mom!” she screamed. “I want Aunt Serena! I want her to be my mom!”

Julian stiffened.

He had expected resistance. He had not expected hatred.

From the time Tyla was old enough to understand, he had told her that her mother’s position in the pack was

complicated. That Wynne could not visit freely. That there were political reasons.

But he had always made one thing clear. Wynne loved her. Fiercely.

When Tyla was younger, she would not sleep without Wynne’s photo under her pillow. She used to beg Julian

to take her to see her mother.

Until Agnes intervened.

Agnes had made it very clear. If Julian dared sneak Tyla out to see Wynne, she would have Wynne expelled from Wolf City immediately. A rogue with no pack protection rarely survived long.

Julian had never been willing to gamble with Wynne’s life.

So he had lived divided.

With Wynne, he had forced himself to act cold and distant, refusing to let her see their daughter.

With his mother, he had played the obedient Alpha heir, even choosing a Beta she approved of and

pretending to build a relationship just to keep her satisfied.

His eyes darkened.

He grabbed Tyla’s wrist firmly, not gently this time.

“I taught you better than this,” he said, his voice sharp. “Your mother loves you. She has never had a choice in

any of this. She saved my life. She is the only mate I will ever recognize. If I hear you call her that again, you will be punished. Do you understand me?”

Tyla had been raised like a princess of the pack. She had never seen this side of him.

She began to shake. Tears streamed down her face as she tried to hide behind Serena.

Serena had heard everything.

Her blood drained from her face.

She had known Julian cared about Wynne. She had not realized he loved her like that.

Yes, they had signed an agreement at the beginning. A staged relationship. A show for Agnes and the pack

elders.

But Serena had believed she mattered to him, at least a little.

Why else would he have chosen her out of all the she-wolves in the pack?

She had taken risks because of that belief.

She had snapped intimate photos when Julian was distracted. She had slipped into his room before he woke,

pressing bruises onto her own skin to fake love bites. She had staged bedroom shots and sent them
