Chapter 6

The courtyard was empty.

Under the dim golden lights, there was no one.

No figure.

No movement.

No scent.

Wynne’s scent, which should have lingered in the snow, was completely gone.

Julian’s stomach dropped.

A cold dread spread through his chest, tight and suffocating.

“Wynne?” he called, his voice rough.

Nothing answered him.

Only the hush of falling snow.

He reached for their mind link.

Silence.

Not blocked. Not resisted.

Just empty.

His pulse began to pound.

He pushed Tyla slightly forward without realizing how strained his voice had become.

“Call her,” he said. “Tell your mother to stop hiding.”

Tyla crossed her arms, stubborn.

“She’s not my mom,” she muttered. “Grandma said she’s a rogue with no status.”

Julian’s expression changed completely.

He knelt and gripped her shoulders, his tone low and terrifyingly calm.

“If you refuse to recognize her as your mother, then I will not recognize you as my daughter. Think carefully

before you answer.”

Tyla’s eyes widened.

She had never seen him like this.

Her voice trembled as she began calling for her mother.

She kept calling until she started coughing.

Until her voice turned hoarse.

No response.

Julian searched the courtyard.

Then he saw it.

Red staining the snow.

And beside it, a delicate necklace.

The gift Wynne had prepared for Tyla.

Why was it lying in the snow?

His heart began to race.

Whose blood was that?

Had someone attacked her?

Had Agnes lied?

His thoughts spiraled as he rushed inside the main house.

Agnes was preparing for bed when he kicked her door open.

“Did you touch Wynne?” he demanded.

Agnes gave him a bored look. “She is beneath my attention.”

His hands were shaking now.

He ordered the butler to pull up the courtyard security footage immediately.

On the screen, Wynne stood alone in the snow, watching him and Serena walk away. She was crying.

A few minutes later, Tyla ran into frame holding a box.

She handed it to Wynne, smiling, urging her to open her gift.

The moment the lid lifted, the box exploded.

Smoke, sparks, burning debris.

It hit Wynne directly in the face.

Julian stopped breathing.

The footage showed Tyla deliberately sticking out her foot.

Wynne fell backward onto the fireworks.

Wynne, who used to cling to him during vaccinations because she was afraid of pain.

Now her hands were shredded, burned and bleeding.

Even as she collapsed, she was calling Tyla’s name.

Asking for help.

Julian saw red.

He turned and slapped Tyla across the face.

“She is your mother! How could you do that? And before dinner, you lied to me, didn’t you? Wynne never

bullied Serena!”

Tyla did not cry.

She was too scared to.
