Xavier’s face lit up when he heard Scarlett’s voice. Using his cane for support, he rose from the chair beside the hospital bed, his movements deliberate but warm. “Scarlett, my dear! Perfect timing-I was hoping to steal a moment of your time. Would you indulge me?”
Though her expression remained guarded, Scarlett responded with practiced politeness. “Of course, Grandpa.”
He was family, after all-and if she were honest, he had always shown her more genuine kindness than anyone else in that household.
Even as she recognized the purpose behind his visit, she fought to keep the rising bitterness at bay.
Setting the food containers on the bedside table, she noted Nolan’s improved color and said gently, “I brought you something light to eat. I wasn’t sure what you’d feel like having, but you should keep your strength up. Once you’re discharged, I’ll take you out for a proper meal.”
Scarlett made no attempt to conceal her concern for Nolan, even with Xavier as a witness.
She believed in being direct-it was better than allowing room for misinterpretation.
Nolan offered her a soft, grateful smile. “You really shouldn’t have gone to all this trouble. I’m perfectly capable of feeding myself.”
Scarlett’s tone remained even but carried an edge. “If the world were a safer place, you wouldn’t be lying in a hospital bed in the first place.”
Her words held layered meaning-a subtle rebuke aimed at Xavier, while simultaneously revealing the depth of her care for Nolan.
Once satisfied that Nolan was comfortable, Scarlett excused herself and accompanied Xavier into the corridor.
At the far end of the hallway, Xavier hesitated for a long moment before speaking, “Scarlett, 1 understand your anger, but Daniel’s mother is a good soul. Life hasn’t been kind to her. Think of this as extending compassion to someone who genuinely needs it.”
Scarlett lowered her head, emotions churning within her. She felt trapped and profoundly misunderstood.
Tears pricked at her eyes, but she stubbornly willed them away.
Pressing her lips into a firm line, she refused to let her composure break.

Both she and Nolan were healers by profession-saving lives was in their blood.
She knew Nolan’s character better than anyone. He would have operated on Daniel’s mother regardless of whether anyone intervened.
Yet now, with everyone pressuring her, she felt even less willing to facilitate it.
Why should she comply with their demands so easily?
How could they destroy a person’s reputation and face no consequences?
Nolan was the true victim here. Why hadn’t Daniel offered a single apology? Why send intermediaries to pressure her instead?
Even facing her beloved grandfather, she stood her ground. “Grandpa, I hear what you’re saying. But Nolan is the one who suffered because of them. Whether he chooses to forgive them or perform this surgery is his decision alone. I won’t speak for him, and I won’t pressure him.”
Xavier sighed wearily. “Shall I try to mediate? Perhaps we can find a way for both sides to move forward.”
Scarlett studied him for a prolonged moment before responding, “I’m not the one whose career was nearly destroyed. I have no right to negotiate on his behalf.”
Xavier released a long breath. “Very well, I won’t press further. Just bring Vanessa to visit when you can. At my age, I don’t know how many opportunities I’ll have left to see you both. If you have
any affection for me, do visit more often.”
Scarlett gave a quiet nod of agreement.
Xavier asked a few more routine questions-about her work, Vanessa’s school progress, the state of things between her and Vincent…
Scarlett offered only brief, noncommittal responses.
After some light conversation, Xavier announced he should be heading home.
Scarlett didn’t attempt to delay him. She accompanied him to the hospital entrance, watched as he settled into the car, and only then turned back inside.
Returning to the room, she noticed Nolan hadn’t touched the food.
“Is something wrong with the food?”
Nolan leaned against the raised bed, smiling at her. “I thought you probably hadn’t eaten either. I was waiting for you.”

Truthfully, he didn’t need to speculate-the two portions in the container made her intentions clear.
Scarlett sat and began eating with him.
Throughout the meal, she carefully avoided mentioning the surgery, sticking to neutral topics instead.
She asked about complex medical cases and discussed her preparations for the exams.
Nolan answered patiently while closely observing her mood.
Noticing her subdued demeanor, he asked gently, “Is something troubling you?”
Scarlett shook her head. “No, everything’s fine.”
Nolan lifted his injured hand slightly, a gentle smile playing on his lips. “Looks like I’ll be ready to hold a scalpel again soon.”
He was testing the waters, but Scarlett pretended not to notice, simply smiling back. “That’s wonderful. In a few days when you’re discharged, you can—”
She didn’t finish her sentence before Nolan looked at her seriously. “I’ll perform the surgery for Daniel’s mother.”
Scarlett was stunned. “What did you say?”
Nolan met her gaze steadily. “I don’t want you caught in the crossfire of their conflicts. You need to focus on your studies. This kind of drama is the last thing you should be dealing with.”
