Chapter 153 The Final Straw
This time, Claire didn’t seem to be playing games.

Hearing her say she was unhappy, Elias frowned impatiently. “What do you mean? Are you starting something again?”
Every time they argued, Claire was always the first to back down. In that sense, Elias always held the upper hand.
But this time, Claire had no intention of letting him have his way.
She looked directly at Elias and said, “Elias, let’s break up.”
Her words took him by surprise, but he didn’t try to stop her or persuade her otherwise. In his experience, Claire had threatened to break up more than once, and every single time, she had been the one to come back, asking to reconcile.
So, he assumed this time would be no different. He saw no need to beg or explain.
Claire had expected this reaction. She wasn’t even disappointed. She simply took Scarlett’s hand and walked out of the private room.
Elias didn’t wait for them to fully leave before turning the music and strobe lights back on. The room instantly returned to its loud, chaotic state.
One of his friends spoke up, “Elias, maybe you should go talk to her. She seemed really upset this time.”
Elias brushed it off. “Relax. She’ll be back begging soon enough. No other guy would want her after I’m done with her. Who’d want someone who’s been passed around?”
His friend pressed a little. “Elias, isn’t that a bit harsh?”
Elias picked up the microphone. “Why worry? Let’s keep having fun. She’ll come back.” His amplified voice was loud enough for Scarlett and Claire, now further down the hall, to hear clearly-a deliberate message to Claire not to push her luck.
Scarlett, concerned, instinctively tightened her grip on Claire’s hand.
Claire stopped and smiled at her. “Scarlett, I’m really okay.”
Feeling somewhat reassured, Scarlett didn’t press further.
But then Claire pointed in a direction. “Scarlett, look over there.”

Scarlett followed her gaze and saw Vincent, Vanessa, Daniel, Sabrina, and Harris.

The bar was loud and chaotic-completely unsuitable for a child as young as Vanessa. She shouldn’t have been there at all.
Scarlett checked the time-almost 11 p.m. Remembering Vanessa’s stomach ache from a few days prior, a surge of anger rose within her. She had specifically told Vincent to maintain a regular sleep schedule for Vanessa.
Clearly, he hadn’t listened.
Frustrated and annoyed, Scarlett instinctively took a few steps toward them but stopped short.
Even if I take Vanessa away tonight, what about next time? If I confront them now, Vanessa would likely just accuse me of meddling.
After a moment’s hesitation, she decided to let it go. Why bother when her efforts went unappreciated? She had already done what she could; the rest was Vincent’s responsibility.
Scarlett held back. Without interfering, she left the bar with Claire.
Outside, they stood by the roadside, letting the cool night air wash over them. Feeling slightly better, they both silently avoided the topic of relationships.
Claire looked at Scarlett. “Come with me to pack my things?”
Scarlett agreed without hesitation. “Okay.”
Claire seemed surprised. “Aren’t you going to ask anything?”
Scarlett replied, “I can tell you’re serious about moving on. You look exactly like I did when I finally gave up on Vincent.”
Claire smiled faintly. “You know, Scarlett, I always knew clinging on was wrong. But sometimes, you have to hit rock bottom before you can turn back.”
Scarlett was taken aback. “Claire, you…”
Claire’s smile was bittersweet. “So, I begged him to get back together on purpose. I was deliberately good to him. I just wanted to see how heartless he could really be-to see if he had any heart left at all.”
Scarlett didn’t know what to say. She hugged Claire tightly. “It’s all over now. It’s never too late to let go.”
Some people let go in an instant; others need to be battered and bruised, leaving both parties wounded, before they can move on.

At Claire’s place, Scarlett helped her pack, deciding what to keep and what to discard.
Halfway through, Vincent called.
Seeing his name, Scarlett was reluctant to answer, but worried it might be about Vanessa, she picked up.
“What is it?” she asked directly.
Vincent inquired, “Where are you?”
Scarlett didn’t want to answer. “Just say what you want.”
