Chapter 154 Drawing the Line

:

Scarlett knew Vincent hadn’t called just to make small talk.

“I don’t need you to come back to Ravenshade Villa for the next few days,” Vincent said.

“Fine,” Scarlett replied flatly. She had already expected this-with Sabrina back, there was no place for her at Ravenshade Villa anyway.

“Vanessa is doing well. You don’t need to worry about her,” Vincent added.

“I know.” Scarlett’s voice grew quieter. Of course Vanessa would be fine with Sabrina around.

She was about to hang up when Vincent spoke again, “Where were you on Saturday night? Why didn’t you answer my calls?”

Scarlett knew he was referring to the night Damian was in her car. “Vincent, I don’t owe you any explanations,” she retorted matter-of-factly.

“You’re my wife. I need to know you’re safe.” Vincent’s tone darkened with displeasure.

Scarlett let out a bitter laugh. “Vincent, that really isn’t necessary.” Without another word, she ended the call.

Wife? Safety? How much of that was genuine concern? If this had happened before, she would have been overjoyed. But now, she didn’t trust him. He loved Sabrina-how could he possibly care about her?

On the other end, Vincent leaned against the bathroom wall, irritated by the abruptly ended call. He lit a cigarette, the flame flickering in the dim light.

Daniel emerged from a stall. “Who were you talking to? Looking all secretive.”

Vincent took a slow drag before exhaling. “My wife.”

It took Daniel a moment to realize he meant Scarlett. “What’s up? You never call her.”

Lately, Vincent had noticed a change in himself. He often found himself thinking about Scarlett, wanting to know her whereabouts. But then he’d reason-she was Vanessa’s mother, after all. It was only natural to be concerned.

He didn’t answer Daniel’s question. He didn’t know how.

After finishing his cigarette, he straightened up and said vaguely, “My wife hasn’t been very obedient lately. Should I… rein her in a bit?”

Daniel stared at him, speechless. How was he supposed to respond?

Vincent didn’t press further, silently walking out of the bathroom.

When they returned to the table, Vanessa was dozing with her head on Sabrina’s lap.

Sabrina looked up. “What took so long?”

Vincent sat down calmly. “Someone was taking their time in there.”

Harris, sipping his drink, choked mid-swallow.

Daniel shot him a glare, knowing Vincent had shifted the blame.

Just then, Vanessa lifted her head from Sabrina’s lap.

Seeing how sleepy she was, Daniel leaned in and asked, “Vanessa, who do you usually sleep with at home?”

“I sleep with Sabrina,” she mumbled, rubbing her eyes.

Daniel put on a serious face. “How about sleeping at mine tonight?”

“Why?” Vanessa frowned.

Daniel crooked his finger. “Come closer, I’ll tell you a secret.”

Curious, Vanessa leaned in.

Daniel whispered, “Because you might interrupt your dad and Sabrina’s… alone time.”

In Daniel’s mind, Sabrina was the one who truly suited Vincent. Hearing Vincent mention Scarlett earlier had made him sense danger for Sabrina, so he decided to play matchmaker.

With Vanessa as a third wheel, how could the two share a bed and grow closer?

“What’s ‘alone time’?” Vanessa asked, confused.

Daniel whispered again, “Don’t you want your dad and Sabrina to always be with you? Don’t you want a little brother or sister?”

Hearing about siblings, Vanessa immediately resisted. “No! Having babies makes her bleed! I don’t want Sabrina to bleed!”

Her agitation drew looks from Vincent and Sabrina.

Daniel quickly soothed her. “Okay, okay, no bleeding.”

After she calmed down, he asked, “So, are you brave enough to sleep by yourself?”
