Awakened Housewife Ignore Betrayer's Begs (Scarlett) novel Chapter 206

Chapter 206 A Child’s Longing

Her voice was soft, carrying a hint of a whimper.

Vincent

put his phone away and turned back, forcing a smile. “What is it, sweetheart?”

Vanessa asked worriedly, “Is Mommy okay now?”

Vincent nodded. “Yes, she’s fine.”

Vanessa then asked curiously, “Did she go back to her place?”

Vincent paused. “I… forgot to ask.”

Vanessa frowned, her expression unhappy. “So… Mommy can’t come see me?”

For some reason, even though Vanessa claimed she didn’t like her mother and didn’t want to see her, whenever she felt unwell or scared, thoughts of her mom instinctively surfaced.

Seeing Vanessa’s discontent, Vincent sat on the edge of the bed. He gently stroked his daughter’s hair and asked softly, “Do you want Mommy to visit you?”

Vanessa buried her face in the pillow, only showing her profile to Vincent. She mumbled, “Maybe a little. But not that much. I have you and Sabrina. That’s enough.”

Vincent rubbed her cheek, recognizing her unspoken longing. He didn’t press further, simply coaxing her to sleep.

It was late, and Vanessa soon drifted off.

Vincent looked down at Vanessa’s peaceful face, a heavy feeling settling in his chest.

After she was sound asleep, he left the bedroom and went to his study.

There, he called Scarlett again.

After a moment, she picked up.

Vincent got straight to the point. “Vanessa would like to see you.”

Hearing this, Scarlett was slightly taken aback.

But then it struck her-her daughter, who seemed to dislike her so intensely-how could she possibly want to see her?

With that thought, Scarlett refused. “It’s too late. As long as you take good care of her, that’s

what matters. I need to rest.”

Not giving Vincent a chance to say more, Scarlett decisively hung up.

After disconnecting, she set her phone to silent mode.

That night, Scarlett had a nightmare, reliving the agony of giving birth to Vanessa.

It had been a natural delivery. Her cervical blood vessels had ruptured, leading directly to massive hemorrhaging and infection. To save her life, the doctors had to perform multiple blood transfusions, replacing nearly all the blood in her body.

The pain was something only she could truly comprehend. The terror she felt then was nearly overwhelming.

But in the end, she had pulled through.

Yet, every time she remembered that experience, she felt suffocated.

She woke the next morning, her face streaked with dried tears.

She sat on the bed, staring blankly into the space before her.

She didn’t know how much time had passed when a knock came at the door. Clara called from outside, “Auntie, are you awake? Can I come in?”

Hearing the voice, Scarlett snapped out of her thoughts. She quickly answered in a hoarse voice, “I’m awake, come in.”

Clara pushed the door open. Dressed in pink pajamas and holding a doll, she walked in and climbed onto the bed.

Snuggling up to Scarlett, Clara asked worriedly, “Auntie, Mom and Dad said you got hurt by a dog. Are you better now?”

Scarlett held Clara close and said softly, “I’m fine now.”

Clara looked up at Scarlett, her voice sweet. “Mom and Dad told me to cheer you up today, to take you out to have some fun.”

Scarlett stroked Clara’s hair. “Just having you here makes me very happy.”

Clara hugged Scarlett, gave her a kiss on the cheek, and then handed her the doll she was holding. “Auntie, one of the housekeepers gave this to me. She said someone left it for you.”

Scarlett looked down at the plush toy in Clara’s hand. It wasn’t large or elaborate, just a simple child’s toy, but Clara said it was meant for her.

She picked it up and examined it. It wasn’t a branded doll, quite plain really, with embroidered eyes and a stitched smile.

After a moment’s thought, Scarlett figured it was probably from Damian. She couldn’t think of anyone else.

Placing the toy beside her pillow, Scarlett heard Clara say, “Auntie, get ready. I’m taking you out to play.”

It was Saturday. Not wanting to disappoint the little girl, Scarlett agreed.

Clara said she was taking Scarlett out, but they ended up at the theme park.

Scarlett didn’t call her out on it and simply went along, enjoying the day with her.

At the park, while Clara was on the carousel, Scarlett stood by, taking photos and cheering her on, giving her all the positive attention.

Meanwhile, Vincent had also brought Vanessa to the theme park.

“Daddy, I want to ride the carousel!”

Vincent, holding Vanessa’s hand, agreed without hesitation. “Okay, let’s go.”

But just as they approached the merry-go-round, both Vincent and Vanessa spotted Scarlett, who had her back to them, taking pictures of Clara.
