“Clara, smile! Open your arms wide. Yes, that’s perfect! You look absolutely beautiful!”

“Auntie, take another one!”

“Oh Clara, you’re such a natural in front of the camera! So adorable! I could watch you all day”

The carousel kept turning, and Scarlett held up her phone, continuously capturing moments.

Watching this scene, Vanessa suddenly felt a pang of sadness. “Daddy, I don’t want to ride anymore,” she said, her voice tinged with annoyance.

Vincent noticed Vanessa’s shift in mood, concerned she might be feeling unwell again. “What’s wrong, sweetheart?”

Vanessa buried her face in his shoulder, her voice muffled. “Let’s go find Sabrina.”

Vincent held her with one arm while gently stroking her hair with his other hand. “Sabrina’s busy with her doctoral research lately; she doesn’t have much free time. We shouldn’t disturb her.”

This made Vanessa even more upset. “But then there’s no one to play with me.”

Scarlett was with Clara, and Sabrina was occupied with her studies.

What about her?

Who was left to play with her?

Her words tugged at Vincent’s heartstrings. He rested his chin on top of her head. “Daddy’s here. I’ll stay with you.”

“Fine then,” Vanessa replied without further argument, though her tone clearly indicated reluctance.

Vincent knew she wasn’t happy, but he didn’t realize her discontent stemmed from longing for her mother’s attention. A child’s emotions can be complex, sometimes even confusing to themselves.

Vanessa leaned against Vincent’s chest. Turning slightly, she could still see Scarlett taking photos of Clara. They were having such a wonderful time, laughing together, completely unaware of her and Vincent standing behind them.

But her mom wasn’t willing to share that happiness with her.

Vanessa didn’t want to watch any longer. “Daddy, let’s go play something else,” she said.

Eager to lift her spirits, Vincent agreed immediately. Still concerned, he added gently, “Just for a little while, okay? Your injury hasn’t fully healed yet.”

Vanessa nodded. “I know. I’ll be careful.”

Vincent took her on the mini-train and the swings. She seemed to enjoy herself, yet a strange, unsettled feeling lingered within her. She couldn’t quite identify what that discomfort meant.

After a few rides, Vanessa began to lose interest.

Back at the carousel, as it gradually slowed to a stop, Scarlett helped Clara

Just as she straightened up, she heard a cheerful boy’s voice call out, “Miss!”

step down.

Scarlett turned toward the sound and saw the little boy she’d met at the gala the previous night. Today he was wearing athletic wear and a black baseball cap.

She remembered him clearly, even recalling his father calling him Eric.

Recognizing him, Scarlett smiled warmly. “Oh, it’s you, Eric.”

The boy told her earnestly, “Miss, my full name is Eric Wilson.”

Scarlett’s smile widened. “I remember your name now.”

When Clara turned around, Eric spotted her. “Clara? Is that you?”

“Eric, what are you doing here?” Clara asked as she stepped out of the carousel area.

Instead of answering, Eric turned his head, scanning the surroundings, and called out loudly, “Mr. Langley!”

Mr. Langley?

Damian?

Scarlett looked around but didn’t see him at first. Then, gazing further ahead, she spotted Damian walking toward them, hands in his pockets, radiating his characteristic casual confidence. He had a lollipop in his mouth, making one cheek bulge slightly.

As he approached, he didn’t even glance at Scarlett, looking down at Eric instead. “What’s up, kid?” he asked.

Eric stood beside him, linking his small finger with Damian’s. Before the boy could speak, Clara chimed in, “It’s you! How do you know Eric?”

Damian looked at Clara and gave her a gentle smile. “I’m good friends with Eric’s dad.”

Clara understood immediately. She stepped forward, took Eric’s hand, and announced, “Perfect! Then let’s all play together!”

Before Eric could protest, Clara was already pulling him toward the next attraction. They were classmates with Vanessa at kindergarten, so they all knew each other well.

As the two children ran ahead, Scarlett called out worriedly, “Clara, slow down! Watch your step!”

Clara shouted back an acknowledgment while pulling Eric onto a bouncy castle. The two of them started jumping, their laughter filling the air.

Scarlett turned to look at Damian. He had averted his face, offering only his profile to her.

Even so, Scarlett spoke up, “About last night… Claire told me what happened. Regardless of everything, thank you.”

Damian didn’t respond, didn’t look at her, but he didn’t walk away either. He just stood there beside Scarlett, his face turned

away.
