But then she reconsidered—if Vincent truly knew where the marriage certificates were, as he claimed, then she was willing to make this trip.

So, before Vincent could lose his patience, Scarlett picked Clara up and set her down gently in the center of the living room.

“Clara, Auntie needs to go with Uncle to take care of something important. I’ll be back very soon, I promise. I’ll have the chef prepare your favorite fish tonight, okay?”

Tears rolled down Clara’s cheeks. Her small hands clutched tightly at Scarlett’s clothes, unwilling to let go, unwilling to agree.

Seeing this, Scarlett’s heart ached. She hugged Clara close and coaxed her gently, “Be a good girl, Clara. I always keep my promises.”

Leaning against Scarlett, Clara finally sniffled and agreed, “Okay then. But you have to come back early, or I’ll get Mom and Dad to come find you.”

Scarlett rubbed the top of her niece’s head, her heart melting. “I will.”

Then Clara cupped Scarlett’s face, gave her a soft kiss on the cheek, and said, “Bye, Auntie.”

Tears finally fell from Scarlett’s reddened eyes. She pressed her lips together and whispered, “Bye.”

As she stood up to leave, Vincent approached again.

He crouched down in front of Clara and gently ruffled her hair. “Next time, come visit Auntie and Uncle at our place, alright? Vanessa will be there too; she can play with you.”

Clara pulled away, glaring at him resentfully, and didn’t agree to his suggestion.

Seeing her rejection, Vincent didn’t push further, merely offering a faint, somewhat helpless smile.

Outside Theron Manor, Vincent opened the passenger door for Scarlett.

Scarlett glanced at it and refused. “No, thank you. I’ll sit in the back.”

Hearing this, Vincent quickly moved to block the rear door handle with his body.

Scarlett frowned at his action.

Vincent didn’t speak, just insisted wordlessly with a firm attitude that she sit in the front.

Arguing would only waste time, so Scarlett reluctantly got into the passenger seat.

But then, Vincent leaned most of his upper body into the car after her. Scarlett tensed immediately.

Vincent leaned over, pulled the seatbelt across her, and buckled it securely. As he straightened up, he noticed spots of blood seeping through the sleeve of her white blouse.

He paused, then reached for her arm.

Scarlett flinched, quickly pulling her hand back and looking at him warily. “What are you doing?”

Seeing her strong reaction, Vincent frowned slightly. “Your arm is bleeding. Let me see.”

Scarlett’s expression remained cold. “I don’t need your help.”

Vincent crouched beside the car door and reached for her arm again, but she refused once more. “Vincent, I said I don’t need you to.” Her tone was sharp now, edged with anger.

Vincent’s face was half–hidden in the shadowy light, his gaze complex as he stared at Scarlett.

After a long moment, he asked, “Are you afraid of me? Or are you just repulsed by me?”

In his memory, she had never been like this. She had always welcomed his touch.

But now…

Scarlett turned her face, her eyes cool and distant as they met his. “Vincent,” she said, using his full name, “let’s just keep interacting the same way we used to. You don’t need to worry about me, and I don’t need to worry about you.”

Vincent didn’t agree or disagree. In the dim, shifting light, his expression was hard to read. Scarlett couldn’t tell what he was thinking.

But after a few seconds, his voice came again. “Do you think I was too distant with you before? Is that why you resent me now?”

Scarlett found it ridiculous. “What’s the point of talking about this now?”

Vincent shook his head, his meaning unclear. “Maybe there is.”

Tired of his rambling, Scarlett grew impatient. “Are we going or not? If not, I’m getting out of the car.”

Hearing this, Vincent looked at her for a long moment before finally straightening up.

Before reaching Stewart Manor, Vincent pulled over and parked in front of a supermarket.

Scarlett, not understanding why, remained in the car.

Vincent got out, then opened the passenger door. “Aren’t you coming?” he asked.

Scarlett was confused. “What do we need to buy?”

Vincent said, “We should bring something for Grandpa.”

Hearing that, Scarlett got out.

They walked into the supermarket together. Scarlett browsed the gift section, but Vincent wasn’t beside her.

After selecting a gift, Scarlett turned to look for Vincent.

She saw him take something from a shelf in another aisle. As he walked closer, she saw clearly what it was–a box of condoms.

He made no attempt to hide it, holding it openly in his hand, completely unbothered by Scarlett seeing it.
