Chapter 216 Morning Tears.
The hope in Vanessa’s heart instantly died. “Okay, then,” she said, defeated.
After hanging up, Vanessa burst into loud sobs.

“Lily, I want Mommy! Mommy would stay with me! Mommy wouldn’t leave me! Mommy, I want Mommy! Waaah…!”
Vanessa cried hysterically. Lily held her, pacing back and forth in the room.
It took half an hour of comforting before Vanessa, exhausted from crying, finally quieted down.

At Theron Manor, for once, Scarlett slept in.
It was the first time in what felt like forever that she had slept until ten o’clock.
Well–rested, she felt refreshed and clear–headed.
Before she was fully awake, a small arm wrapped around her. “Auntie, you’re finally awake!”
It was Clara’s voice.
She had come over around eight, but seeing Scarlett still asleep, she hadn’t had the heart to
wake her.
Scarlett turned on her side and pulled the round–faced Clara into her arms. “What brings you here, sweetie?”
Clara nuzzled against Scarlett’s neck. “Auntie, I want you to help me paint an autumn landscape. It’s my homework, and it’s due tomorrow, Monday. I haven’t finished it yet.”
Scarlett was about to say yes when her phone rang.
She looked down; it was an unfamiliar number.
Hesitating for a second, she answered.
Before she could speak, an excited voice came through. “Is this Ms. Theron?”
Recognizing Eric’s voice, Scarlett smiled. “Eric, it’s me.”
Hearing the confirmation, Eric said happily, “Ms. Theron, can you come out and play with me?”

Remembering her promise to Clara, Scarlett declined. “Eric, I’m not free today. Maybe next time, okay?”
Eric persisted. “What about tonight?”
Scarlett chuckled. “I think our family might be having a dinner together tonight.”
Eric quickly asked, “Can I come too?”
Before Scarlett could respond, Clara couldn’t hold back anymore. She yelled into the phone, “It’s a Theron family dinner! Why would you come? You’re not a Theron!”
Even through the phone, Eric was startled by Clara’s tone. He stammered, “O–oh… okay then.”
Before Scarlett could smooth things over, Clara hung up the phone. “That Eric seems so quiet and shy at school, who knew he could be so clingy? Like super glue.”
Scarlett was amused by Clara’s description. She stroked her niece’s cheek affectionately. “Don’t be so fierce. He doesn’t mean any harm.”

Meanwhile, the very same “harmless” Eric, whom Scarlett had just defended, sneezed twice in quick succession.
A finger poked him in the back. “Well? Did you manage to invite her?”
Eric shook his head. “No.”
Damian’s face fell. “Those cheese sticks you had this morning… I want you to spit them out within two minutes.”
He had bribed the boy with snacks to help him invite Scarlett out. He hadn’t expected her to refuse.
Eric turned to look at Damian, his little face scrunched up in displeasure. “Mr. Langley, Ms. Theron was the one who said no. Why are you taking it out on me?”
Damian was annoyed. He glanced at the boy. “So you get to eat my cheese sticks for free?”
Eric retorted, “If you’re so great, why don’t you ask her out yourself?”
Damian moved closer, lightly pinching Eric’s ear. “Not learning good things at such a young age, huh? Talking back to your elders? Did your dad teach you that? He’s a lawyer, no wonder you’re such a little debater.”
Eric wasn’t really hurt, but he pretended it hurt, yelping a couple of times before sticking out

Damian let go of his ear, cupped the boy’s face in his hands, and put on a mock–fierce expression. “I have never been a coward around women. Unlike you, scared of a little girl like Clara.”
Eric said indignantly, “Clara’s a total tomboy! There’s nothing girly about her!”
Damian released him, leaning back in his chair and closing his eyes lazily. “Making excuses for your own incompetence, huh?”
Hearing this, Eric let out a loud, dramatic “Waaah!” and started crying.
Damian immediately sat up straight, flustered. He reached out a hand, unsure how to comfort him.
Eric cried harder and louder. Damian, at a loss, finally barked, “If you don’t stop crying, I’ll call Clara over to deal with you!”
The threat worked instantly. Eric’s crying stopped abruptly.
He turned his head, glaring at Damian with tear–filled, angry eyes. “Hmph! I’m telling my dad!”
No sooner had the words left his mouth than a pleasant, deep voice sounded from behind them. “What’s going on here?”
