Damian guessed what Scarlett was about to say, and he didn’t want to hear it. So he gently cut her off. “Alright, enough talking for now. Have some water first.”
He lifted the cup again and guided the straw to her lips.
Scarlett’s mouth was parched. She didn’t refuse and took several slow sips.
After watching her drink, Damian couldn’t help a soft, approving murmur. “That’s better.”
Hearing his tone–so gentle, almost as if soothing a child–Scarlett felt her cheeks grow warm.
She didn’t reply, but instead lay back and avoided his gaze.
The IV bag was nearly empty. Noticing it, Scarlett said quietly, “Could you change the bag for me?”
Damian glanced up and saw that it was indeed time. He stood and reached for the new bag hanging on the stand.
As he lifted his arm, his sweatshirt rode up slightly. When Scarlett turned her head, she caught a glimpse of toned, warm–toned skin at his waist.
He really did keep in shape–the kind of physique that looked both strong and lean.
In that moment, her face flushed even deeper.
After changing the bag, Damian sat back down. His eyes lingered on Scarlett’s face, now flushed a vivid pink. A flicker of concern crossed his expression. He reached out and touched her cheek. “Is your fever spiking again?”
Scarlett turned her face away, the tips of her ears also reddening. “No… it’s not that.”
Not entirely convinced, Damian stood again and leaned close, pressing his forehead gently against hers. Feeling no unusual heat, he relaxed slightly.
As he drew near, Scarlett instinctively tensed, her eyes closing.
Just as Damian was about to pull back, his cheek brushed lightly against her eyelashes.
The sensation sent a subtle shiver through him.
He stayed there for a second, looking down at her closed eyes, her lashes trembling faintly. They felt like the softest brush against his skin, stirring a quiet, tingling warmth that spread under his skin.

Scarlett’s body radiated a low, feverish warmth. Damian knew she wasn’t fully recovered, but seeing her like this–lips slightly parted, face softly flushed–he felt pulled in, anchored beside her.
He remained leaning close, half over her, reluctant to move away.
Gazing at her lips, he heard himself ask, his voice lower now, “Scarlett… can I kiss you?”
He rarely asked so directly–and never with such quiet sincerity.
Scarlett felt the question came from somewhere deep and unguarded. It made her heart stumble, then race with a flutter of alarm. She opened her eyes, finding his gaze. Hers was defensive, wary. “Damian… no.”
Hearing it, Damian forced himself to straighten up.
Scarlett could sense the restraint in him, the way he held himself back.
He closed his eyes briefly–they were faintly rimmed with red–and sat still in the chair for several seconds before slowly opening them again.
They looked at each other then, a wordless quiet hanging between them.
After a while, Damian asked softly, “Are you hungry?”
Scarlett realized she was. She gave a small nod. “A little.”
“I’ll have something brought over,” he said.
Scarlett nodded again and closed her eyes.
She felt caught between chills and fever, uncomfortable in her own skin.
Seeing her discomfort, Damian moved from the chair to the edge of the bed. He took her hand. “Do you want me to hold you while you rest?”
Scarlett ached with weakness, unsure whether she was cold or hot. She opened her eyes–they were glassy and bloodshot–and looked at him. Her voice was rough, as if filled with sand. “Damian, I’m okay.”
Even pale and exhausted, she was still stubborn.
Damian didn’t listen. He reached to feel her neck. Her skin was cool, not sweaty–the fever was retreating, leaving chills in its wake.
Worried, he made a decision. Without waiting for permission, he took off his sweatshirt and

carefully slid onto the narrow hospital bed beside her.
The bed was small, barely wide enough for one.

Damian was tall. Lying on it, his legs dangled partly off the edge. He curled himself along the side, then drew Scarlett gently against him.
Half his body was supported by the bed, the other half suspended in air.
But he didn’t complain. He simply held her close, tucking her against his chest, his chin resting lightly on her shoulder. His lips brushed her ear as he whispered, “Still cold?”
As her chilled skin began to absorb his warmth, Scarlett instinctively curled closer into his hold.
Only then did she realize her body had been trembling.
Damian felt her shift nearer. He wrapped his arms more securely around her, sharing his warmth, holding her until the shivering slowly stilled.
