Through the thin layers of their clothing, Damian could feel the soft curves of Scarlett’s body. His face flushed a deep, warm red, heat spreading across his skin.

Unaware of the effect she was having, Scarlett nestled even closer, her movements sleepy and unguarded:

Damian, she murmured, her mind still hazy with fever, hold me a little tighter.”

Her mind was swimming in a haze, foggy and unfocused. She couldn’t believe she’d let such a needy request slip out.

Damian drew her closer, wrapping his arms around her as if he could shield her from everythingpulling her gently but firmly against him.

Pressed against the steady warmth of his chest, Scarlett gradually relaxed, her breathing slowing as she drifted back into a light sleep.

Only when he was sure she was deeply asleep did Damian allow his own grip to loosen slightly.

Still mindful that she might be chilled, he carefully tucked the blanket around her shoulders.

He held her like that for a long while, not daring to move.

Even when his arm grew stiff and numb, he didn’t shift

away.

About half an hour later, Scarlett stirred in her sleep, turning slightly away from him.

Damian looked down at her facepeaceful, soft, and unguarded.

He rarely saw her this relaxed around him.

The sight stirred something tender in him. Without thinking, he leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.

Scarlett didn’t wake, still lost in quiet sleep.

Holding her like something fragile and precious, Damian felt a swell of quiet happiness- followed almost instantly by a pang of fear.

He was afraid that when she woke, she would pull away. Maybe even blame him.

This closeness felt borrowed, temporary, something meant only for the dark.

How he wished time could freeze just like thiswith Scarlett safe in his arms.

Another half hour passed before a nurse came in to disconnect the IV.

She worked quietly, but not long after she left, Scarlett’s eyes fluttered open.

Her gaze was still cloudy with sleep as she found Damian’s face so close to hers.

Seeing her awake, Damian’s expression softened with a touch of melancholy. He parted his lips but didn’t speak.

Scarlett realized he was still holding her. She didn’t push him away or make a sceneshe stayed calm.

Even feverish, she rememberedshe had asked him to hold her. She couldn’t blame him now.

After a quiet moment, she lifted a hand slightly and touched his chest.

Damian,” she said softly, a little embarrassed, I need to use the restroom.

When her first words weren’t a demand to let go, something tight in Damian’s chest eased.

A relieved smile touched his lips as he carefully shifted to sit up. I’ll carry you,he offered.

Scarlett felt sticky and uncomfortablesuddenly selfconscious. What if she smelled of sweat and fever?

I just have a fever, she murmured weakly. I can walk.

The light in Damian’s eyes dimmed almost instantly.

Before she could explain further, he was already off the bed. He drew back the blanket, slid his arms beneath her, and lifted her firmly against his chest.

Looking down at her, his gaze was intent, his tone leaving no room for argument. I’m carrying you, Scarlett. Don’t try to talk me out of it.

Too weak to protest, she gave in.

Damian carried her into the bathroom and set her down carefully on the floor mat, then returned to fetch her slippers from beside the bed.

Back in the bathroom, he knelt, lifted one foot and then the other, slipping the slippers on with gentle care.

Once they were on, he straightened. Take your time,he said quietly. I won’t look. I’ll be right here.

He turned his back to her, standing perfectly still.

Even with him facing away, Scarlett felt awkward.

Damian, she whispered, could you wait outside?

He paused, then nodded. Alright. I’ll be right outside the door. Call me when you’re done.”

He stepped out, closing the door behind him.

Seeing his silhouette through the frosted glass, Scarlett still locked the doorjust in case.

After using the toilet and washing her hands, she unlocked it and pulled the door open.

Damian was already leaning in, his face full of concern. You okay?

Seeing the worry etched between his brows, Scarlett felt a confusing rush of emotions.

A guy like himknown for being a playercould he really care this much?

It was hard to believe. Part of her wondered if it was all just an act.

Maybe, in his eyes, she was useful in some way. A means to an end.

If notshe couldn’t think of any other reason he’d be so attentive.
