Chapter 283 A Mother’s Cooking
Scarlett pushed the confusing thoughts aside and replied offhandedly, “Yeah, I’m fine.”
But as soon as the words left her mouth, Damian scooped her
up again.

Once he had settled her back in bed and pulled the blanket over her, Scarlett–now free of fever and thinking more clearly–stared up at the ceiling.
She could feel Damian’s eyes on her. Turning her head, she asked quietly, “Do I smell bad?”
The question caught Damian off guard. After a brief pause, he answered, “No, not at all.”
“You’re lying,” Scarlett insisted.
“I’m really not,” he said, a hint of urgency in his voice. “Honestly, there’s no smell.”
Seeing him so earnest, Scarlett studied his face, a probing look in her eyes.
But she couldn’t read him, couldn’t quite figure him out.
Finally, she turned away and went back to staring at the ceiling.
Just then, Damian’s phone buzzed.
The room was quiet enough that Scarlett could hear a male voice on the other end. “Mr. Langley, I’ve got the delivery. Should I bring it up?”
“Yeah,” Damian replied.
“Which room are you in?”
“Call when you’re on the floor. I’ll come out and
get it.”
After hanging up, it wasn’t long before the phone rang again.
Damian got up and left the room, returning in under two minutes with a takeout bag in hand. Inside were several stacked containers.
Scarlett realized he’d arranged for a meal to be delivered.
One by one, he unpacked the containers–chicken noodle soup, a fresh garden salad, soft rolls, mini sandwiches, and a few grilled shrimp.
Propping a pillow against the bed rail, Damian helped Scarlett sit up, then picked up a bowl and began feeding her slowly.

Scarlett was truly hungry. She didn’t resist, letting him spoon small bites for her.
The food was comforting and well–seasoned. She ate willingly, visibly soothed by the warmth and flavor.
Halfway through, Damian asked, “Is it good?”
Scarlett nodded honestly. “Yes, it is.”
Hearing that, Damian picked up a shrimp and began peeling it. Casually, he added, “If you like it so much, you should come over for dinner sometime. I’ll have my mom make you more of her specialties.”
Scarlett, who still had a bit of food in her mouth, nearly choked. She coughed, her face flushing, tears springing to her eyes from the sudden fit.
Damian quickly set the shrimp aside, reached for the water cup, and held it to her lips. “Easy now,” he said softly. “My mom prepared all this for you tonight, you know.”
After a few sips, Scarlett caught her breath. She looked at him, unsure how to respond.
When she stayed silent, Damian smiled gently. “Nothing to say?”
Scarlett swallowed. “You know very well I’m still married to Vincent. I’m a mother, Damian. Why are you putting me in this position?”
Damian’s expression turned serious. “I’ve already explained everything to my family. No one gets to decide who I marry–they can either support me or stay out of my life. And my mom isn’t like Amanda. I’m not like Vincent either.”
His words
gave Scarlett
pause.
There was a time she’d wished Vincent would say something like that.
But she wasn’t the same Scarlett anymore.
Damian’s smooth words didn’t sway her as they might have once.
She met his gaze steadily. “What is it you really want from me? Just tell me directly. If it’s something I can give, I will. But if it’s beyond me, you’re wasting your time.”
Damian held her look. Her face was guarded, revealing nothing.
After a moment of silence, he asked quietly, “Would you really give me what I want?”
Scarlett understood the implication behind his question. She didn’t answer, letting the silence

When she didn’t reply, Damian offered her the peeled shrimp. “My mom went to a lot of trouble for you. I’d like to take you to meet her when you’re feeling better. Please believe me- she’s a kind person. And so am I.”
He stressed the last four words deliberately.
Scarlett could tell he genuinely wanted to prove he was a good man.
But she didn’t know how to respond, so she remained quiet.
Damian didn’t push. He understood she still struggled to trust, and she was still recovering. Now wasn’t the time to pressure her.
So he let the subject drop and simply continued making sure she ate.
