Seeing how firmly she said it, the nurse didn’t press further.

Not long after the drip began, Vanessa’s fever spiked again.

The nurse quickly brought some fever reducers, but even after taking them, Vanessa’s condition didn’t improve much.

Growing concerned, the nurse consulted the doctor, who explained it was normal–the flu fever could take a few days to break.

Worried about leaving Vanessa alone in such a state, the nurse kept checking on her.

Meanwhile, Lily had prepared breakfast and taken a cab to the hospital. It was exactly 9:20 a.m.

Weekday traffic was heavy, and she spent the ride anxious that Vanessa would be hungry with nothing to eat.

Earlier that morning, Vincent had called to ask Lily to bring breakfast over and take her time. Lily had asked then, “Mr. Stewart, you’re heading to the office and Ms. Monroe is at the lab- who will stay with Ms. Stewart?”

Vincent had replied, “Vanessa’s mother will be there.”

Hearing that, Lily had felt somewhat reassured.

Wanting to make sure Vanessa had a good meal, she had taken extra care with breakfast, which had delayed her a bit.

By the time she paid the cab driver and hurried to the ward with the food container, it was already 9:30 a.m.

But when she arrived, neither Scarlett nor Vanessa was there.

Setting the container on the bedside table, Lily went to the nurses‘ station to ask about Vanessa.

As soon as the nurse heard the name, she said quickly, “Vanessa spiked a high fever and passed out. She’s been taken to the emergency room.”

Lily froze, tears springing to her eyes.

For a moment, she was too panicked to think straight.

After the nurse called her name twice, she finally snapped back. “Right–I need to call. I’ll call Mr. Stewart.”

Vincent was in a meeting, his phone on silent. But on the projection screen, the caller ID showed Lily’s name.

Knowing she wouldn’t call unless it was urgent, he paused the meeting and stepped outside to

answer.

As soon as he picked up, Lily’s tearful voice came through. “Mr. Stewart, it’s bad. Ms. Stewart has been taken to the emergency room.”

Vincent’s heart clenched as if gripped by an icy hand. His legs moved before his mind could catch up.

Without a word, he strode toward the private elevator.

While pressing the button, he finally managed to speak, “I understand. I’m on my way.”

After hanging up, he stared at the descending floor numbers, his thoughts in turmoil.

He even wondered–what if he was too late? What would happen to Vanessa then…

In that moment, he felt a sharp pang of regret for not listening to Scarlett, for taking Vanessa to the hospital in the first place.

Down in the parking garage, his hands trembled as he started the car.

He hardly remembered the drive to the hospital, his heart lodged in his throat the entire way.

His phone rang–Abbott was calling–but Vincent couldn’t bring himself to look at the screen. He was afraid it might be Lily again, afraid of hearing worse news.

Fortunately, it wasn’t.

When he finally rushed into the hospital, he found Lily pacing outside the emergency room.

Seeing him, she stopped. “Mr. Stewart, you’re here.”

Vincent’s eyes were red–rimmed, his voice rough. “How is she?”

Lily shook her head. “No doctor has come out yet. I don’t know.”

Vincent closed his eyes, his jaw tight.

Confusion and fear churned inside him, his heart pounding heavily.

He sank onto a bench, hunched forward with his hands pressed to his forehead, silently pleading that his daughter would be okay.
