Seeing Vincent like that, Lily opened her mouth as if to speak, then swallowed her words.
Vanessa’s condition was still uncertain–it wasn’t the time to voice every worry.
After a few minutes, Vincent looked up abruptly. “Where is Scarlett?”
Lily turned to him and shook her head. “When I arrived, Mrs. Stewart wasn’t here. I don’t know where she went.”
Frowning, Vincent pulled out his phone and checked. There was his earlier text asking Scarlett to come to the hospital–still unanswered.
Even without a reply, he’d assumed she wouldn’t ignore their daughter’s wellbeing. Maybe she’d just stepped out briefly.
But after another ten minutes passed and she still hadn’t appeared, Vincent tried calling. ·
The phone rang through to voicemail.
He tried several more times with the same result.
A knot of uncertainty tightened in his chest. Was she deliberately ignoring him, or had she not seen the calls?
Just as his anxiety peaked, the emergency room doors opened.
Vincent stood quickly. “Doctor, how is my daughter?”
The doctor, wearing glasses, removed his mask. “She’s stabilized. But she’ll need to stay in the Pediatric ICU overnight. We can move her to a regular room once she’s more stable:”
Vincent released a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.”
Noticing his relief, the doctor’s tone turned stern. “Your daughter is only five. You can’t leave a child alone in the hospital. Where were her parents?”
Vincent’s brow furrowed. “Wasn’t her mother here?”
“If her mother had been here,” the doctor replied bluntly, “she wouldn’t have ended up in the ER.”
Then Scarlett hadn’t come at all.
Vincent stopped hearing the rest of the doctor’s words.

All he could think was–Why hadn’t she come?
A hot, restless anger simmered inside him. He tried calling Scarlett again.
Again, no answer.
This time he felt sure–she wasn’t just missing his calls. She was ignoring him.
Because she’d ignored his message and his calls, their daughter had nearly been in serious danger.
Thankfully Vanessa was alright. But if something had happened to her…
Vincent couldn’t finish the thought.
Back in Scarlett’s hospital room, Violet had already left. Scarlett had finished her breakfast.
Damian, who hadn’t slept properly all night, had stubble shadowing his jaw and faint dark circles under his eyes. Even so, he showed no sign of leaving.
He sat beside the bed now, carefully peeling an apple with a small knife.
The peel came off in one long, curling ribbon–a testament to his oddly focused patience.
Though he looked tired, there was something quietly arresting about him sitting there, head slightly bowed.
Scarlett’s phone on the bedside table had lit up several times. She knew calls or messages were coming in, but she didn’t look.
Damian had seen it too. A glance showed it was Vincent calling.
When Scarlett made no move to answer, he didn’t comment.
Once the apple was peeled, he finally asked, “Not going to pick up his call?”
Scarlett knew he meant Vincent.
After a pause, she said, “No.”
She guessed Vincent wanted her to go to the hospital for Vanessa.
But in her current state, how could she?

Even if she weren’t sick, she didn’t want to go anymore.
Vanessa didn’t need her–why humiliate herself trying?

Seeing her resolve, Damian allowed himself a small, pleased smile. He sliced the apple neatly, arranged the pieces on a plate, and picked one up with a toothpick.
Scarlett accepted it without protest, eating quietly.
Watching her attitude toward Vincent, Damian’s smile lingered.
He’d always believed that if he stayed persistent–and if Vincent kept acting as he did—he and Scarlett would find their way to each other eventually.
Maybe the time was coming for Scarlett to keep the promise she’d once made him.
His unguarded expression didn’t escape Scarlett’s notice.
“Damian,” she asked, “what are you smiling about?”
He looked back at her, warmth still in his eyes. “I’m just glad you’re finally letting go of him.”
His words sent a faint, unexpected flutter through her chest.
She’d always suspected Damian had ulterior motives for being kind to her.
But moments like this—when his emotions showed so plainly on his face–left her genuinely
uncertain.
