Scarlett couldn’t help wondering whether Damian was putting on an act or speaking from the heart.
It was so difficult to separate truth from performance.
So, she decided not to dwell on what was real and what wasn’t.
Considering his words, she replied, “Actually, there isn’t anything left to care about anymore.”
Her tone was calm, and Damian could tell she wasn’t just speaking out of momentary anger.
Seeing she could say that, he continued, “You know, it’s never too late for a fresh start. There’s nothing wrong with seeing what else—or who else is out there.”
Scarlett was leaning against the raised bed, feeling drained. Damian’s comment made her frown. She looked at him, a touch of weary amusement in her voice. “I’m lying here sick, and you’re still in the mood to tease me.”
But Damian looked back seriously. “I’m not teasing you, and it’s not a joke. I mean it.”
She knew the “who else” he meant was himself.
Scarlett didn’t want to keep debating the point with him.
As it was almost noon, she changed the subject. “Damian, I’d like some shrimp.”
She really did want shrimp–and she really didn’t want to keep talking about feelings.
It was rare for Scarlett to ask for something herself. Naturally, Damian was pleased. “Alright,” he said promptly. “I’ll have some sent over.”
Seeing his smile, Scarlett suddenly remembered something. “Don’t have your mother make it,” she added quickly.
But Damian glanced up, still smiling, and showed her his phone screen. “Too late. Already told her.”
Scarlett looked at the text conversation on the screen. She almost asked him to unsend the message, but the reply was already there.
“Of course. If she likes it, I’ll make it for her anytime.”

And just above it, Damian’s text read, “Mom, my future wife wants shrimp.”

Scarlett didn’t bother reading the earlier messages. Seeing there was no taking it back, she closed her eyes briefly. “Damian,” she asked, “do you always chase women this way?”
She sounded genuinely curious, her eyes searching his.
Putting his phone away, Damian raised an eyebrow. “I’ve never tried to chase anyone else. Only you.”
Scarlett didn’t take his words to heart. “Well,” she said lightly, “if that’s the case, your methods are… quite creative.”
Hearing that, Damian’s expression cooled. “Could you stop trying to annoy me?” he asked, frustration edging his voice.
Scarlett could tell he was upset. She looked over and clarified, “I’m not trying to.”
Damian took a slow breath. He’d been about to say he was used to it—that it didn’t matter–but before he could speak, Scarlett’s phone lit up again on the bedside table.
As expected, it was another call from Vincent.
Given the string of missed calls, Damian asked carefully, “Are you sure you don’t want to answer? What if it’s important?”
Just as firmly as before, Scarlett said, “No.”
Seeing her resolve, Damian didn’t push further. Vincent was his rival–he wasn’t about to steer Scarlett back toward him.

Outside the emergency room, Vincent finally stopped calling after yet another attempt went unanswered.
He stayed at the hospital for two more hours before Abbott called again.
“Mr. Stewart, this morning’s meeting is still on hold. Everyone is waiting for you to resume.”
Vincent instructed Lily to stay with Vanessa and call immediately if anything changed. As the housekeeper, Lily naturally agreed.
Leaving the hospital, Vincent returned to the office and worked through the afternoon.
Lily never called.

By the time he finished, it was already around seven in the evening.
When he drove back to the hospital, Scarlett still wasn’t there.
He asked Lily, “Has Mrs. Stewart been here at all this afternoon? No calls either?”
Lily could hear the anger in his voice but could only tell the truth. “No, Mr. Stewart.”
Vincent didn’t ask anything else. He went to check with the doctor, who said Vanessa’s condition had stabilized but she needed to remain in the Pediatric ICU overnight for observation. She could be moved to a regular room the next day.
Exhausted, Vincent suddenly felt the need for a cigarette.
He left the inpatient wing, went downstairs, and sat on a bench in the hospital courtyard.

As he exhaled a cloud of smoke, he noticed Violet and Clara walking along the path toward the hospital entrance.
Violet was holding Clara’s hand with one hand and carrying a bag of fruit with the other. Engrossed in their conversation, they didn’t see Vincent sitting in the garden.
