Just as the two were about to leave the garden, Vincent couldn’t hold back any longer. He stood up and quickly caught up to them.

“Violet.”

Hearing her name, Violet turned, slightly startled. Recognizing Vincent, she relaxed a bit and asked, “Is everything alright?”

Vincent didn’t beat around the bush. “Have you seen Scarlett?”

Instead of answering, Violet asked, “Why do you ask?”

“Vanessa spiked a high fever and lost consciousness. She’s in the ICU. I’ve called Scarlett over and over, but she won’t pick up. She’s usually reachable–I’m worried something might be wrong.”

Violet didn’t tell him Scarlett was in the same hospital.

She simply said, “I’m just her sister–in–law, Vincent. I’m not really in a position to know her whereabouts. I’m sorry–I can’t help you.”

Vincent didn’t press her. He just replied wearily, “I see. Thanks anyway.”

Violet looked at him for another moment, then took Clara’s hand and continued toward the

entrance.

But Vincent suddenly called after her again. “Violet, the flu’s going around with the season change. You probably shouldn’t bring Clara to the hospital.”

Violet had actually forgotten about that. She offered a small, polite smile. “You’re right. Thanks.”

Then she led Clara away.

When Violet returned alone later, Vincent was no longer in the garden.

She carried a bag of fruit to the inpatient wing and entered Scarlett’s room, where Damian was helping her with dinner.

Violet glanced at the containers–the meal looked nourishing and thoughtfully prepared, gentle enough for someone recovering.

“How considerate, Mr. Langley,” she remarked. “This doesn’t look like hospital food.”

Damian looked up and smiled. “Good eye. My mother made it.”

Violet’s eyes widened slightly. “Does your mother know about Scarlett?”

While carefully feeding Scarlett another bite, Damian said, “Yes, I told her a while ago.”

“And about Scarlett being married… and having a child?” Violet ventured.

Seeing Scarlett was nearly finished, Damian gently wiped her mouth, then stood to face Violet more fully. “Violet, everyone in my life knows there’s a woman I care about. They also know I won’t marry anyone else.”

Violet studied his expression. He seemed completely sincere.

After a pause, she said with a soft smile, “It sounds like you’re the kind of man worth trusting with a future.”

She deliberately glanced toward Scarlett as she said it–clearly meaning for her to hear.

Scarlett did hear, but she pretended not to, quietly sipping the last of her soup.

Damian looked at her too. He knew she’d heard and was choosing not to react.

He didn’t push. He just returned Violet’s smile and said, “Thank you. But whether I’m worthy or not depends on what Scarlett thinks. If she says I am, then I am.”

Violet nodded gently. “I believe effort is rewarded, sooner or later.”

“I hope so,” Damian replied, his tone touched with quiet resolve.

In his pursuit of Scarlett, his confidence wavered sometimes. Moments like this–when Violet was subtly encouraging things–Scarlett’s lack of response made the road ahead feel long.

But maybe it was just because she wasn’t divorced yet. Maybe once she was free, and if he kept showing up for her, day after day, she might finally let him in.

After Scarlett finished, Damian took the bowl and began tidying the containers from the bedside table.

Watching his attentive, thorough care, Violet couldn’t help smiling warmly.

She sat beside the bed, took Scarlett’s hand, and glanced toward Damian before lowering her voice. “I ran into Vincent on my way in.”

Scarlett’s expression tightened. “Did he give you a hard time?”

Violet gave her hand a reassuring pat. “No, he didn’t. But he said he couldn’t reach you. And it sounds like Vanessa’s in the ICU.”
