Chapter 455 The Uninvited Guest Returns

Scarlett noticed Damian’s little gestures.

His playful antics brought a soft smile to her face.

As the car began to pull away, Damian glanced up.

This time, he caught Scarlett smiling. She was sitting in the back seat, the window halfway down. The breeze gently ruffled her hair, leaving a few strands resting against her cheeks, occasionally brushing her skin.

And in that moment, those same strands seemed to brush against Damian’s heart as well.

Only after Vincent’s car had disappeared from view did Damian make his way through the light rain to his own vehicle.

He hadn’t wanted Scarlett to leave with Vincent either, but she was concerned about Vanessa.

He loved Scarlett-how could he take away her chance to be there for her daughter?

With that thought, as much as it pained him, he knew there was no point in resisting.

After a brief pause, he pulled out his phone and texted Scarlett, “Go take a warm shower once you’re back. Don’t catch a cold. And remember-you’re going back for Vanessa, not for that jerk.”

He wanted to say more, but he held back.

Once the divorce was final, he wouldn’t have to hold his tongue like this anymore.

Vincent drove with the heat turned up.

In the back, Vanessa had dozed off, her head resting gently on Scarlett’s lap.

Scarlett gazed down at her daughter’s peaceful face. She was sleeping deeply.

At that moment, Scarlett’s heart felt overwhelmingly tender.

It had been so long since she’d been able to look at her daughter this closely.

Up front, Vincent kept glancing at the two of them through the rearview mirror. His emotions

were tangled-he couldn’t quite tell if he felt happy or uneasy.

Soon, the car pulled up to the entrance of Ravenshade Villa.

Scarlett stepped out and moved to lift Vanessa, but Vincent spoke up quietly, “Let me carry her.”

Scarlett nodded silently and stepped aside.

Once Vincent had Vanessa in his arms, Scarlett followed closely behind.

They made their way to the bedroom, and as they entered, Vanessa began to stir.

Still leaning against Vincent’s shoulder, she blinked sleepily. Scarlett, walking just behind, saw her eyes open.

Scarlett offered a warm smile and asked softly, “How about a quick bath before bed?”

Vanessa, still hazy from sleep, looked at Scarlett-here, at the villa-unsure at first how to respond.

But as her awareness settled, she gave a small nod. “Okay.”

After Vincent laid her down, Scarlett helped Vanessa sit up.

Her clothes were damp and muddy, so Scarlett began helping her out of them before leading her to the bath.

Vincent hadn’t left the room yet. Scarlett turned to him and said gently, “Vanessa’s getting older now. It’s better if you’re not in the room while she’s bathing or changing.”

Vincent seemed to realize it then. “You’re right,” he replied quickly. “I’ll step out.”

It occurred to him that a child Vanessa’s age might not yet have a strong sense of privacy.

As her father, he needed to be mindful and teach her those boundaries in time.

The thought made him appreciate Scarlett’s attentiveness even more.

If it were Sabrina, she might not have even noticed.

Once Vincent left, Scarlett finished helping Vanessa undress, then went to run the bath.

When the tub was ready, she carefully helped her in.

As she bathed her, Scarlett’s eyes fell on the faint bruises and red marks on Vanessa’s arms and legs.

Her voice softened with emotion. “Did it hurt when you fell earlier?”

Vanessa nodded quietly. “A little.”

“Were you scared?” Scarlett asked, her throat tightening.

“Yeah.”

Scarlett’s heart ached. Through a blur of tears, she said gently, “From now on, sweetheart, don’t run off on your own when there aren’t any grown-ups around, okay?”

Vanessa nodded again. “Okay.”

Seeing her so compliant, Scarlett smiled tenderly.

She brushed a damp strand of hair from Vanessa’s forehead. “How about Mommy takes you to preschool tomorrow?”

At that, Vanessa looked down and stayed quiet.

Scarlett understood-Vanessa didn’t want to go because she’d been acting out, pushing the other kids away. No one wanted to play with her, so she dreaded going back.

But avoiding it wasn’t the answer. Scarlett wanted her to learn how to reach out and make friends.

As she rinsed Vanessa’s shoulders, Scarlett ventured carefully, “Wouldn’t it be nice to have more friends to play with?”

Vanessa remained silent, her expression serious.

Sensing her resistance, Scarlett decided not to push it just then.

Worried she might get chilly, Scarlett quickly finished the bath and lifted her out, wrapping her in a fluffy towel.

Just after she’d helped Vanessa into her pajamas, Lily’s worried voice floated in from outside the door. “Mrs. Stewart, Ms. Monroe is back.”
