Vanessa, however, brightened instantly. She leaned forward eagerly. “Lily, is that Sabrina?”
Lily glanced at Scarlett before nodding to Vanessa. “Yes, it’s her.”
Vanessa felt a surge of happiness, but the memory of being left alone that afternoon still lingered uncomfortably.
Before she could sort through her feelings, Sabrina’s anxious voice called from the hallway, “Vanessa! Vanessa!”
Hearing her name, Vanessa hurried out.
Sabrina, limping heavily on her injured leg, made her way into the bedroom.
Vanessa ran from the bathroom toward her, stopping just short, afraid of bumping into Sabrina’s bad leg. She looked up, her face a picture of hurt confusion.
Sabrina couldn’t even bend down properly. She looked at Vanessa, her own eyes glistening with tears.
Vanessa broke into loud, shuddering sobs, her tone full of reproach. “Why didn’t you come find me?”
Sabrina’s cheeks were already wet. She choked out an explanation, “I’m so sorry, sweetheart. This is all my fault.”
Vanessa cried harder. “Do you know how scared I was down there? I kept wishing you would show up and tell me everything was okay… but you never came…”
Sabrina took a pained step forward. She reached out clumsily to wipe Vanessa’s tears, her voice thick with guilt. “Vanessa, I did look for you. I tried, but I couldn’t find you. My leg… I couldn’t walk right, I-”
Vanessa cut her off. “But why did it take so long? If you’d come sooner, the rats wouldn’t have bitten me.”
Sabrina’s face crumpled with a pang of genuine distress. She pulled Vanessa into a careful hug, pressing the girl gently against her.
She was crying openly now. “I’m sorry. I know I was wrong. I’ll never let this happen again.”

Vanessa hugged her back. “Your leg is hurt. If it weren’t for that, I know you would’ve found me. Sabrina… I forgive you. I don’t blame you anymore.”
Hearing that, Sabrina finally allowed herself to relax. “That’s good. I’m so glad you don’t blame me. I promise you, nothing like this will ever happen again.”
Vanessa nodded against her. “Okay.”
After holding her a moment longer, Sabrina gently eased Vanessa back. “Let me look at you, sweetheart. Are you really alright?”
Vanessa murmured agreement and stepped out of the hug.
Sabrina looked her over, her hands gently checking Vanessa’s face and arms. Seeing no serious harm, she finally let out a shaky breath of relief.
Thank goodness the child was safe.
If anything worse had happened to Vanessa, Sabrina knew Vincent would never have forgiven her.
Seeing Sabrina’s obvious concern, Vanessa pushed the afternoon’s dark thoughts aside.
She decided Sabrina must still care for her deeply-she just hadn’t been able to get there in time because of her injury.
The thought lifted Vanessa’s spirits.
She crouched to look at Sabrina’s cast. “Does it still hurt a lot?” she asked, her voice full of sympathy.
Of course it hurt.
When Sabrina had heard Vanessa was found, she’d wanted to rush back immediately, but Maria had held her back, advising her to wait a little.
Looking at Vanessa now, Sabrina forced a smile and shook her head. “Seeing you safe makes the pain go away.”
Vanessa hugged her again. “You’re just saying that. I know it still hurts.”
Sabrina stroked her hair without replying.
“Are you going back to the hospital tonight?” Vanessa asked.

“No, I’m staying here with you.”
“Will you sleep in my room? I just had a bath. Mommy gave it to me. I smell nice.”
“Of course I will.”
“Sabrina… I fell right after I went out. I called and called, but nobody heard me.”
“I’m so sorry. I should have been more careful.”
“It’s okay. It wasn’t your fault.”

From the moment Vanessa heard Sabrina’s voice and ran out, Scarlett had remained alone in the bathroom, staring at her own reflection in the mirror. Her face looked pale and drawn.
In that moment, her eyes held a depth of sorrow and quiet anguish.
She had allowed herself to hope that after such an ordeal, Vanessa might see through Sabrina -might realize how little the woman truly cared for her.
It seemed that had been nothing but her own wishful thinking.
In Vanessa’s heart, Sabrina remained perfect, irreplaceable.
The moment Sabrina appeared, Scarlett-the mother-once again became little more than a stranger by the roadside.
Yet only minutes before, when it was just the two of them, Vanessa had been so tender, so close. The contrast was a quiet, piercing blow.
