Meanwhile, near the host stand at the entrance of the restaurant, the cashier spoke up, “Excuse me, gentlemen–it looks like both of you settled the check. We have a duplicate payment.”
Hearing that, both Scarlett and Melinda glanced over.
Almost at the same time, Damian and Nolan replied, “Just refund it to him.”
Once the words left their mouths, Nolan added, “I already said dinner was on me. There’s no need for you to pay, Mr. Langley.”
Damian gave a faint, sarcastic smile. “I don’t like owing people favors. Consider this my thanks for helping my mother last time.”
Nolan responded evenly, “Helping people is what I do. You don’t need to turn it into a transaction. The check is mine.”
Quiet irritation simmered in Damian’s expression. He took a step forward, his voice low. “Are you going to be difficult about this?”
Nolan held his ground, squaring his shoulders. “I could ask you the same.”
The two stood facing each other, tension crackling between them, neither willing to yield.
Seeing things could easily escalate, Scarlett immediately rose from her seat and moved between them, instinctively positioning herself slightly in front of Nolan.
Even with her there, neither man stepped back.
Damian glared past her at Nolan. “Trying to look like a big shot?”
Nolan met his gaze head–on. “When I take someone I care about out to dinner, I pay. No performance necessary from you.”
Hearing Nolan refer to Scarlett as “someone I care abou” only fueled Damian’s anger.
“The hell you care, I’m not letting you play that role.”
“That isn’t your call to make,” Nolan shot back.
“If you’ve got something to say, let’s take this outside, Hling behind her isn’t a good look,” Damian challenged, his tone sharp.
For the first time, Nolan’s polite demeanor hardened. “ne by me. I’ve wanted a word with you alone
anyway,”
They went back and forth like two kids arguing over the last piece of candy–and over that same “candy“, it seemed a real fight might break out.
As Damian and Nolan’s voices grew more heated, Scarlet, caught in the middle, couldn’t calm either one
down.
Her cheeks flushed, she turned toward Damian. “Damian, enough!”

At her raised voice, Damian suddenly went quiet. He looked down at her, frustration and resentment clear in his eyes. “Why am I the only one you’re stopping? Why not him?”
He thrust a finger in Nolan’s direction.
Scarlett pushed his hand down gently but firmly. “Tonight was just a dinner between me, Nolan, and Melinda. Keep it civil, please, Mr. Langley.”
Her words drew a clear line–placing Damian on one side and the rest of them on the other.
Damian knew exactly what she meant, and he didn’t want to hear it. Anger flashed across his face. “You know what? Forget it. I’m leaving.”
Damian chose to step back–not because he was afraid, but because he couldn’t stand the thought of Scarlett being upset with him.
Reluctantly and helplessly, he turned and walked out.
Even after slipping into his car, Damian muttered under his breath, “You only act this way because you know how I feel. Anyone else, and I wouldn’t bother.”
Scarlett didn’t hear him. She slowly turned back, looking up at Nolan. “Let’s go, Nolan.”
Seeing the weariness on her face, Nolan felt a pang of guilt. “I’m sorry for putting you in that position.”
Scarlett offered a faint, pressed–lip smile and shook her head. “I should be apologizing to you.”
Her regretful expression made Nolan speak quickly. “Scarlett, none of this is your fault. It’s because you’re the kind of person who draws others in… even someone like Damian wants to be near you.”
He paused then, realizing his words almost sounded like praise for Damian.
And in a way, it was true. Nolan didn’t know much about the man–mostly rumors and tabloid snippets- but whenever Damian appeared around Scarlett, he was always alone, without an entourage.
After a brief silence, Nolan reached out and gently softened the frown between Scarlett’s brows with his thumb. “You should be smiling,” he said softly. “Don’t le this trouble you.”
His touch was warm. A slight, genuine smile finally touched Scarlett’s lips. “You too,” she replied.
She then glanced toward Melinda, who still stood a few steps away, caught in a daze. Her deeply thoughtful expression was almost amusing.
Scarlett couldn’t help a quiet chuckle. “Melinda, you coming?”
Melinda blinked back to the present. “Huh? Oh–yeah, I’m coming.”
After they left the restaurant, Nolan offered to drop Melinda off first.
No one objected; her hotel was just a short drive away.
Once they’d walked Melinda to her room and made sure she was settled, Scarlett and Nolan finally stepped. back out into the evening.
