Vanessa saw what was happening and immediately called out, “Daddy, where’s Sabrina? Is she not coming back?”

Vincent stopped mid–stride. He turned and looked at Vanessa, a faint smile on his face. “Vanessa, it’s getting late. Why don’t you let Lily help you get washed up and ready for bed? Dad and Mom need to talk.”

Scarlett glanced at Vanessa too. She could tell right away that her daughter had been crying.

The little girl’s face was so pitiful it made her chest tighten.

But Vincent didn’t give her a chance to dwell on it. He took her hand and led her upstairs.

Behind them, Vanessa called out a couple more times. “Daddy. Daddy.”

Vincent was too focused on clearing things up with Scarlett about him and Sabrina to even hear her.

Vanessa watched helplessly as Vincent guided Scarlett up the stairs. It only made her feel worse, and tears started streaming down her face.

When she still didn’t see Sabrina walk through the front door, Vanessa ran outside. She was going to find Sabrina herself.

Lily was in the kitchen and didn’t notice Vanessa slip out

Vanessa ran through the gates of the Ravenshade Villa and saw the gate next door standing wide open. She rushed straight in.

Maria had pinched her once before, and Vanessa was terrified of her. She’d never dared to go next door alone.

But now, just to find Sabrina, she wasn’t even afraid of that monster Maria anymore.

The moment she stepped through the gate, she saw Sabrina being helped inside by Maria.

Vanessa burst into tears. “Sabrina!”

Sabrina turned. When she saw Vanessa running out bare foot, she didn’t look concerned. Instead, she frowned.

She’s running around again.

If something happened to her, Vincent would blame me.

That was Sabrina’s first thought.

Vanessa picked her way across the cobblestones, took Sabrina’s hand, and sniffled. “Why won’t you come home? Are you mad at me?”

Sabrina let Vanessa hold her fingers. “Your mom’s here,” she said. “For the next few days, I’m not coming back to the house.”

Vanessa didn’t understand. “Why? Don’t you want me anymore?”

Sabrina gently pulled her hand away. “Go back for now, she said. “When your mom leaves, I’ll come back.” With that, she turned and walked into the house without looking back.

Maria stood in the doorway, glaring at Vanessa like she wanted to devour her. “Get the hell out of here!” Vanessa was shaking all over from fear. She couldn’t bring herself to look at Maria. She didn’t even dare cry out loud. Biting her lip and whimpering, she ran back to Ravenshade Villa.

Lily had just noticed Vanessa was missing and was searching everywhere. When she saw Vanessa come running back, she scooped her into her arms.

“Sweetheart, where did you go? And why aren’t you wearing any shoes? You’re gonna worry me to death!”

Vanessa didn’t hear any of Lily’s concern. She was sobbing. “Lily, I want Mommy to leave. I don’t want her here. I hate her. I wish she’d just disappear. When she had me, why didn’t she just die?”

Vanessa’s words sent a chill down Lily’s spine.

Lily carried her inside the house, her tone serious now. Sweetheart, Mrs. Stewart is your mother. She’s the one who loves you more than anyone in this world. How could you say something like that?”

Vanessa rested her head on Lily’s shoulder, crying in fits and starts. “I only want one mommy. I don’t want two.”

Lily was confused at first, but then she thought about it and understood what Vanessa meant.

Vanessa wanted Sabrina to be her mommy.

Lily said, “Sweetheart, your mother is the one who gave birth to you. You have her blood in you. You’re her own flesh and blood. She’s your mother, and she’s the only one who can be your mother.”
