Vincent searched her face, but there wasn’t a flicker of emotion in her eyes. She was looking at him like he was a stranger.

It was nothing like the Scarlett he used to know.

He froze for a few seconds, then asked hoarsely, Do you believe me?

Scarlett shrugged. She answered him evenly. Sure. Of course I believe you.

Vincent pressed. Really?

Scarlett nodded. Yeah. Really.

Honestly, whether she believed him or not didn’t really matter. She just didn’t want to upset himshe was afraid he might take back the idea of a divorce.

Vincent stared at her for a long time. Good. I’m glad you believe me.

Scarlett smiled at him. Okay. I’m going to go wash up now. You should get ready for bed too.”

Vincent didn’t move. He took her hand and said softly, I got you something. Go take a look.

He nodded toward the coffee table behind him.

Scarlett followed his gaze and saw a small box sitting on the table.

She hesitated, but walked over slowly.

She sat down by the coffee table and opened the box. Inside was a pearl necklace. It looked expensive.

Then Vincent came over, took the box from her, and pulled out the necklace.

Turn around,he said. Let me put it on you.

Scarlett didn’t argue. She turned her back to him and sat still.

His fingers brushed against her skin as he fastened the clasp.

Once it was on, Vincent pressed his lips to the back of her neck.

His mouth was warm, and it burned against her skin, stirring something she’d tried to bury.

Her body stiffened for a second. Then she said quietly, her voice a little rough, Thanks. I’ll take

it.

Whether he was being kind to her now for some reason or not, Scarlett figured she might as well accept whatever he offered.

Once they were divorced, nothing of his would have anything to do with her anyway.

She’d given him years. She deserved something in return.

Seeing that she was willing to take the gift, Vincent felt something loosen in his chest. He even started to wonder if her talk about divorce had been a joke.

He didn’t believe that Scarlett, who had loved him so deeply, could just let it all go that easily.

Just as the thought crossed his mind, a knock came at the door.

Lily’s voice drifted in from the hallway. Mr. Stewart, there’s a guest downstairs.

Vincent answered, Got it. I’ll be right down.”

He stood up from beside Scarlett.

He looked down at her. Get some rest. I’ll come check on you later.”

Scarlett wanted to say no, but to avoid provoking him, she just smiled and said, Okay.

After Vincent went downstairs, Lily stepped into the room.

Scarlett looked up at her. Seeing the troubled expression on Lily’s face, she asked, What is it? Something wrong?

Lily hesitated, then said, Mrs. Stewart, would you please go see Vanessa? She’s been crying nonstop.”

Scarlett paused at that. But then she thought about it and figured Vanessa was probably crying over Sabrina. The worry faded.

Her expression hardened. I’m not going. I need to rest.”

When Lily heard that, she pressed on. Mrs. Stewart, Vanessa isn’t a bad kid. But if she keeps spending this much time with Ms. Monroe

Before Lily could finish, Scarlett cut her off. Lily, there are some things I can’t fix either.”

Lily let out a long sigh. Vanessa used to be such a sweet girl. But now

Lily didn’t bring up the horrible things Vanessa had said. But seeing that Scarlett no longer seemed to care about Vanessa the way she used to, she knew it would be hard for mother and daughter to ever find their way back to each other.

When Vincent came downstairs, he found Caleb sitting in the living room.

Hearing footsteps from the second floor, Caleb quickly stood up from the sofa. Vincent.

Vincent was briefly surprised to see who the guest was, and his brow furrowed slightly.

But as he walked toward Caleb, he smoothed his expression into a smile. Caleb.”

Caleb looked at him. Where’s Sabrina?

Vincent suddenly realized he didn’t actually know where Sabrina was.

He frowned, thought for a moment, then said, She went out for a walk.
