When Vincent saw it, he wasn’t sure what he felt. But he called Sabrina anyway.
The phone rang a few times, then she picked up.
Through the line, he could hear noise in the background–loud, chaotic, but lively.
Above all that noise, Sabrina’s voice came through clear and pleasant. She kept it low. “Vincent? What’s up?”
On his end, Vincent didn’t know what he was feeling. But when he spoke, his voice came out cold enough to sting. “What are you doing?”
Sabrina sounded happy. She laughed. “Vincent, I’m at a concert today. I just finished my set. It’s a little loud over here.”
Vincent could hear the announcer on the other end talking about the show wrapping up. But he also heard Daniel’s voice.
“Sabrina, the concert’s over. Let’s grab something to eat.”
It was easy to hear the delight in Daniel’s tone.
Sabrina answered him. “Okay, let me just change and freshen up.”
Daniel continued, “Sure. I’ll wait for you outside. Take
your time.”
Sabrina laughed. “Okay.”
On his end, Vincent heard the whole exchange.
Once Daniel’s voice faded from the line, Vincent asked, “Sabrina, are you with Daniel?”
In the past, Sabrina had gone out to eat with Daniel before, and Vincent had never had all these tangled thoughts about it.
But now, something felt off.
What exactly felt off, he couldn’t even say.
Sabrina didn’t hesitate. “Yeah, he came to the show today.”
Hearing this, Vincent’s voice dropped. “Oh.”
His tone was obvious. He wasn’t happy.

Sabrina heard it, but she didn’t ask.
So both of them fell silent.
After a few seconds, Sabrina said carefully, “Vincent, if there’s nothing else, I’ll let you go?”
Right as she said that, Vincent spoke quickly, “Sabrina, Vanessa’s kindergarten has a Christmas event. She wants-”
But before he could finish, Sabrina hung up.
Listening to the dial tone, Vincent’s chest went cold.
He stared at the dark screen, lost in thought for a long moment.
But he had work to do, so he pushed it aside.
That evening, Vincent drove back to Ravenshade Villa.
As soon as he stepped through the front door, Vanessa, who’d been playing with her toys, ran
over.
The little girl was in her fuzzy pale pink pajamas, her hair in two little braids. She looked soft and sweet.
She ran up to Vincent, wrapped her arms around his leg, and chirped, “Daddy, you’re home.”
Vincent crouched down and lifted her gently into his arms. He ran a hand over her hair. “You’re home? How was kindergarten today? Did you have fun?”
Vanessa nodded. “Yeah, I had lots of fun. But the teacher said there’s a Christmas show, and parents are supposed to come too. I think we even have to do a parent–child dance together.”
Hearing the hope in her voice, Vincent looked at her and asked seriously, “Then tell Daddy, who do you want to dance with?”
Vanessa tugged at his collar, mumbling, “Daddy, I want Sabrina to go with me.”
Vincent pressed his forehead gently against hers. “How about Mommy goes with you
instead?”
Vanessa didn’t answer that. She just asked, “What about Sabrina? Is she not going?”
Remembering his call with Sabrina at noon–and that she was with Daniel–it stung in a way he didn’t like.
He stroked Vanessa’s hair. “Sabrina’s busy. She can’t go with you.”

Vanessa’s lips trembled, and tears started rolling down her cheeks. Eyes wet, she said, “If Sabrina can’t go, then let Auntie go with me.”
Her reluctance was written all over her face, her little expression pinched with displeasure. Vincent cupped her cheek gently. “What’s wrong? You upset?”
“No.” Vanessa shook her head, but her pout deepened.
Vincent straightened her dress. “Other kids all have their mommies go dance with them. You don’t want Mommy to go with you?”
Vanessa looked down. Tears streamed silently down her face. Her voice came out in a small whimper. “Sabrina is my mommy. I only want her to go.”
Seeing that she wasn’t budging, Vincent sighed. “Alright. I’ll call her. You can talk to her yourself.”
At that, Vanessa’s face brightened into a happy smile. She nearly bounced. “Okay.”
Vincent, seeing how much she wanted it, had no choice but to call Sabrina.
