But even though Vincent had asked, Sabrina still didn’t agree. “Vincent, I’m really sorry. already have plans with my college roommates that day. They hardly ever get a chance to come back to town, so I…”
She didn’t finish, but her refusal was clear.
When Vanessa heard Sabrina say no, she panicked and called out, “Sabrina!”

Vanessa’s nose was red. Her voice wobbled. “Sabrina, when are you coming back?”
Sabrina said, “I don’t know yet.”
Vanessa said, “I miss you.”
Sabrina replied, “I miss you too, sweetie.”
Vanessa wanted to ask Sabrina if she could come to the Christmas event, but before she could get the words out, Sabrina cut in gently, “Vanessa, I’m been really busy lately, so I won’t be able to go to the Christmas show with you. Why don’t you ask Daddy to go with you, okay?”
Her tone was warm, but Vanessa’s tears fell like broken pearls.

He sat down on the sofa and tried calling Scarlett. She didn’t pick up.
He called once. She didn’t answer. He didn’t try again.
When Vincent called, Scarlett had just stepped out of Claire’s apartment.
She saw the incoming call but didn’t answer.
After it rang out, her car suddenly wouldn’t move. An error message flashed on the dashboard.
Scarlett tried a couple of times. The car wouldn’t budge.
She had no choice but to get out and check.
She walked around the car and found a few nails embedded in the right rear tire.
A headache pulsed at her temples. She rubbed her forehead in frustration, standing there not knowing what to do.
There was a jack and a spare in the trunk. She thought about pulling them out and trying to fix it herself.
But once she had the jack out, she was stuck. Not only was she not strong enough–she didn’t even know how to use the thing.
She stood by the roadside, dazed. Just then, a car pulled up in front of her.
The driver’s window rolled down, revealing Caleb’s arrogant face. He tilted his chin at her. “Need help?”
Scarlett glanced up. “No.”
Caleb rested his elbow on the window frame, watching her like she was entertainment. “You sure?”
The
way
he said it made Scarlett suspicious.
She even wondered if he’d planted those nails himself.

Seeing her ignore him, Caleb got bolder. “A little thing like you can’t even handle a jack. How many seconds would you last before falling apart in bed?”
Scarlett straightened up, smiled sweetly, and asked mockingly, “You wanna find out?”
Her words caught him off guard.
He looked at her with ill intent. “Yeah. I do.”
Scarlett looked at him, then her face went cold. “Then I’ll call Vincent right now. You can ask him.”
Before Caleb could respond, she was already calling Vincent.
He picked up
immediately.
Caleb thought Scarlett was just bluffing for his benefit–until he heard Vincent’s voice on the line. His smirk vanished.
Vincent’s voice came through. “Where are you?”
Scarlett put
it on speaker. Caleb could hear Vincent clearly.
She said, “I just left Claire’s place. My car got a flat. I can’t drive. But I ran into Caleb outside the building. He said he wanted to ask you something. Perfect timing, so I called.”
