Chapter 490 A Flat Tire
As she spoke, Scarlett held the phone out toward Caleb.
Caleb stared at it, his face cold. “You-”
Scarlett held the phone steady, looking at him expressionlessly.
She didn’t say a word. Caleb had no choice but to take it.
On the other end, Vincent called out. “Caleb?”
Caleb answered. “Yeah. It’s me.”
Vincent said, “Scarlett’s car broke down. Can you give her a ride, please?”

Caleb couldn’t refuse. He glared at Scarlett, his jaw tight, but he agreed. “Sure. I’ll take her back.”
Hearing that, Vincent relaxed. “Thanks, Caleb.”
Caleb forced a smile. “No problem. She’s practically family. Least I could do.”
Vincent said, “I’ll wait for her, then.”
Caleb let out a couple of stiff laughs before handing the phone back to Scarlett.
She took it and said, “I’m hanging up now.”
Vincent said, “Okay. Text me if anything comes up.”
Scarlett didn’t reply and ended the call.
After she hung up, Caleb tongued the inside of his cheek, teeth gritted. “Scarlett. You’ve got
some nerve.”
Scarlett looked at him, amused. “You pay for what you say. Not everything’s okay to say out loud.”
Caleb didn’t feel like arguing. He unlocked the car silently and said impatiently, “Get in.”
Scarlett
put the jack and everything back in the trunk, locked her car, and got into Caleb’s.
She didn’t take the front passenger seat. She sat in the back.
As the car pulled away, Caleb was seething the whole time.

But then, in the middle of his anger, he suddenly laughed. He glanced at Scarlett in the rearview mirror. “Vincent’s already my sister’s man. Why don’t you just come with me instead?”
Scarlett met his eyes in the mirror and sneered. “What could you possibly give me? What makes you think I’d settle for a man worse than Vincent?”
Caleb found her words amusing. “Worse? You’ve never even tried it. Of course you’d say it’s
worse.”
He knew exactly what Scarlett meant, but he deliberately twisted it.
Scarlett didn’t hesitate. “Not interested.”
Seeing her so proud and untouchable, Caleb was both irritated and intrigued. “When Vincent kicks you to the curb, I’ll be there to warm you up.”
He put a deliberate emphasis on “warm you up“, the implication clear.
Scarlett wanted to snap back, but then thought better of it. Not worth it.
Just then, her phone rang again.
She glanced down. Vincent.
She picked up. Vincent’s voice came through. “Where are you now?”
The car was quiet. Caleb could hear everything from the front seat.
Scarlett answered, “Just a few more minutes.”
Vincent said, “What do you feel like eating? I’ll have Lily make something.”
Scarlett thought about it. “I don’t want anything.”
Vincent asked, “What’s wrong? Trying to lose weight?”
Scarlett replied, “No, I’m not dieting.”
Vincent acted like he hadn’t heard her. “You’re already too thin. Any skinnier and you’ll be nothing but bones.”
Scarlett didn’t argue. She just hummed in agreement. “Okay.”
Vincent was quiet for a beat. Then he said, “I’ll wait for you to come back.”
Scarlett was silent for a long time. Then, out of nowhere, she asked, “Vincent, will you ever kick me out?”

“What?” Vincent sounded like he hadn’t heard her correctly.

Scarlett paused. She didn’t want to repeat it. Her voice turned cool. “Nothing. I’m hanging up.”
She looked down, about to end the call, when Vincent’s voice came through again. “No.”
His answer was strangely certain–like he was making a promise.
When his voice came through the line, Scarlett’s grip on the phone tightened.
Her chest constricted.
But quickly, she pretended she hadn’t heard anything. “I’m hanging up
Vincent answered, “Okay. Come home soon.”
In the quiet car, Vincent’s voice was unmistakably clear.
Caleb was driving up front. Hearing Vincent’s words, his eyes narrowed.
He glanced at Scarlett in the rearview mirror.
now.”
It was obvious–Scarlett had asked that on purpose. She was using Vincent’s position to put pressure on him.
What he hadn’t expected was that Vincent’s tone actually sounded like he cared about Scarlett.
But wasn’t he supposed to be about to marry Sabrina?
Thinking about that, Caleb’s frown deepened.
