Chapter 499 The Hope

At the entrance to the main house, Ruth pulled a pair of cotton slippers from the shoe cabinet and set them down at Scarlett’s feet. “Here. Wear these.”
Scarlett looked at the slippers and paused.
They weren’t store–bought. They were handmade.
She noticed the embroidery on the fabric. “Mrs. Langley, is this embroidery?”
Ruth nodded. “Yes. I took a class with a master years ago. Thought I’d make things for my future daughter–in–law. I didn’t just make slippers–I embroidered a wedding dress, too. You want to see it?”
Scarlett’s chest tightened. “Thank you, Mrs. Langley. Maybe another time.”
Ruth smiled lightly. “Okay. Next time, then. It was made for you, anyway.”
Scarlett stood frozen at the threshold, unsure how to respond.
Seeing her hesitation, Ruth softened her tone. “Scarlett. Come sit.”
Scarlett’s heart was heavy. But she said, “Okay.”
The dining table was full–most of it Scarlett’s favorites.
Ruth stood by the table, waiting. Scarlett didn’t sit until Ruth did.
Ruth ladled soup into a bowl and placed it in front of her. “Eat more. You’ve gotten thin.”
Scarlett’s nose stung. “Okay. Thank you, Mrs. Langley.”
Ruth’s gaze was soft, almost tender. “I came too late tonight. If I’d been earlier, you wouldn’t have had to sit through all that.”
Scarlett felt warmth bloom in her chest. She smiled. “It’s okay.”
Ruth began piling food onto Scarlett’s plate. She didn’t stop until the plate was overflowing.
Scarlett took a sip of the soup. It was good. She took another.
She set the bowl down and asked, “Mrs. Langley, isn’t Damian coming home for Christmas Eve?”
Ruth’s gaze flickered. She forced a smile, “He’s busy. Said he’d come in a few days.”

Scarlett frowned slightly. “I thought he always made time for you. I’m surprised he’s not here tonight.”
Ruth seemed to sense Scarlett’s persistence. She waved a hand. “Never mind him. Let’s just enjoy our meal.”
Scarlett dropped it. But something didn’t sit right.
After dinner, Scarlett helped Ruth clear the table.
When they were done, they moved to the living room.
Scarlett sat on the sofa and pulled out her phone. She texted Damian. “Where are you?”
Ruth wasn’t beside her–she’d wandered off to the other side of the room, busying herself with something.
Scarlett stared at her screen. She expected a slow reply. Instead, it came almost instantly. “What? You miss me?”
Just reading the words, Scarlett could picture his smug grin.
She typed. “I’m at your house.”
Damian replied, “I know.”
Scarlett frowned. “It’s Christmas Eve. Why aren’t you here? Mrs. Langley doesn’t seem happy.”
The typing indicator appeared under his name.
A moment later, his message came through. “You’re there. That’s enough.”
Scarlett was even more confused. “So you’re still working late?”
Damian didn’t answer her question. Instead, he wrote, “You worried about me?”
Scarlett sighed and typed, “I’m just asking. It’s not like that.”
Damian said, “Eat. My mom’s cooking is great. Eat enough for
me,
and keep her company.”
Scarlett was about to tell him they’d already finished.
But before she could type it, Ruth came over.
Hearing footsteps, Scarlett looked up. Ruth was holding a bottle of red wine in one hand and two glasses in the other.

As she approached, she caught Scarlett’s gaze and smiled. “You drink?”
Scarlett nodded. “A little.”
Ruth smiled. “Then have a glass with me.”
It wasn’t a question. It was an invitation Scarlett couldn’t refuse.
Scarlett hesitated. “Okay. Just a little, Mrs. Langley.”
Ruth sat down and poured Scarlett a small glass. Then filled her own.
They clinked glasses. Drank. Before long, the bottle was empty.
Ruth had drunk most of it. At least half the bottle.
Her cheeks were flushed. Her eyes had gone hazy, unfocused.
