She was laughing now, talking freely. About Damian as a boy. How impossible he was. How he didn’t just steal fruit from the neighbor’s tree–he dug a hole and left a mess at the bottom. How he scaled the school fence to skip class and sent his teachers running in circles.

Ruth talked, and Scarlett listened.

But somewhere in the middle, Ruth’s eyes welled up. She wiped at them with the back of her hand. Her words came slower now, slightly slurred. “Scarlett. I’m going to go see that little brat.”

She started to stand.

Scarlett stood too, reaching out to steady her. “Mrs. Langley, it’s late. Maybe don’t.”

Ruth smiled and patted Scarlett’s hand gently. “It’s fine. He’s just upstairs. Not far. I just want to see him.”

Scarlett smiled back, thinking Ruth was definitely drunk.

But she was worried, so she followed her upstairs.

Upstairs, Ruth stopped in front of a closed door. She knocked. No answer.

She tried the handle. Locked.

When it didn’t budge, Ruth’s voice rose. “You coward! Open this door!”

She swayed, barely keeping her balance.

Scarlett grabbed her arm. “Mrs. Langley, let me take you back to your room to rest.”

Ruth turned to look at her, eyes red. “Scarlett. He’s in there. He’s afraid to let you see him like this. That’s why he won’t open the door. He loves you too much. That’s why he’s like this.”

Scarlett didn’t understand. She smiled gently. “Mrs. Langley, you’re drunk.”

Ruth blinked slowly, her gaze drifting. “Maybe. A little. Then you go see him for me. He must be in so much pain right now.”

Scarlett didn’t know if Ruth was speaking the truth or just rambling. But she nodded. “Okay.”

And even when they were, she’d never thought about Damian that way.

Back then, when she loved Vincent, she hadn’t cared about the gap between their families.

Now she was older. She had too much to consider.

A family like Damian’s was still out of her reach.

Scarlett didn’t know what to say. She met Ruth’s earnest gaze and stammered, “Mrs. Langley, I…”

She helped Ruth to her bedroom.

Once they were inside, Scarlett helped her out of her coat and shoes.

She wet a cloth in the bathroom and came back to wipe Ruth’s hands and face.

When she was done, she tucked the blankets around her and sat by the bed for a while.

When Ruth’s eyes were fully closed, Scarlett quietly got up and left the room.

She meant to leave the house. But Ruth’s words clung to her. Almost against her will, Scarlett found herself standing in front of that closed door again.

She knocked. “Damian. I know you’re in there. Come out.”
