Halfway down the stairs, her foot caught on the edge of a step. She landed hard-her tailbone taking the brunt-and slid a few steps before stopping.

It happened so fast. Scarlett gasped.

The sound echoed through the house.

Then, the door she’d just knocked on swung open.

Damian was out in seconds, moving toward her fast. “Scarlett. You okay?”

She was sitting on the stairs, face pinched, one hand pressed to her lower back.

The pain was sharp, pulsing.

But she still heard him.

She turned her head and saw him at the top of the stairs.

He was in pajamas and slippers. His face-usually so composed-was pale, drawn tight with something that looked like panic. He was already moving down toward her.

Scarlett blinked. “Damian. You’re actually here?”

He didn’t answer. He crouched in front of her. “Are you hurt?”

She looked up at him, still dazed. “No. Just twisted my wrist a little.”

“Let me see.”

He reached for her hand.

The moment his fingers touched her arm, she winced.

He let go immediately.

Scarlett rotated her wrist carefully. It ached, but nothing felt broken.

She shook her head. “It’s fine. I can move it. Probably just a sprain.”

Damian was still crouched in front of her, his face pale, a thin sheen of sweat on his forehead. His voice came out flat. “Don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not.”

Something in his posture loosened. He took her hand. “Let me help you up.”

She used his arm for support and stood slowly.

The moment she was on her feet, Damian released her and started back up the stairs.

Scarlett frowned. Her voice cut through the quiet. “Damian.”

He didn’t stop. Walked faster.

She raised her voice. “Are you hiding from me?”

Finally, he stopped.

But he didn’t turn around. Just stood there on the stairs. “No.”

Scarlett stared at his back. “Then turn around. Look at me when you say that.”

It hit her then. Everything Ruth had said—maybe none of it was the wine talking.

Damian was hiding. He didn’t want her to see him like this.

But why?

He still didn’t turn. His voice was quiet. “I’m not hiding from you. You should go.”

He started climbing again.

Scarlett followed. “Damian. Stop.”

He ignored her. Reached his door and tried to close it behind him. But Scarlett was already there-her hand shoved into the frame.

He looked at her hand, then at her. Frowned. “Move your hand.”

She looked up. The front of his pajama shirt was stained. Red. Wet.

She was a doctor. She knew blood when she saw it.

lifted to his face. Her voice was cold. “You’re bleeding?”

His jaw tightened. “No. You’re seeing things. Move your hand, or I’m closing the door.”

Scarlett’s voice sharpened. “Then close it. Let me bleed too. Right next to you.”

Damian’s hand faltered on the doorframe. “Scarlett…”

Her eyes were red. “Open the door.”

He turned his face away, wouldn’t look at her. “No.”

Her voice dropped, low and fierce. “Damian. I’m going to say this one more time. Are you opening the door or not?”

She looked like she meant it. Damian had no choice. He pulled the door open.

His voice came out quieter now, almost sulking. “Why do you have to be so aggressive?”

Scarlett didn’t answer. She forgot her own wrist and grabbed his sleeve instead. “Tell me. How did you get hurt?”

He said, “It’s just a scratch. Nothing serious.”

He tried to push her hand away.

She held on tighter.

He looked at her hand on his sleeve. His own hand dropped.
