Chapter 513 A Wound Reopened

Scarlett walked beside her, her chest tight with worry.

At the studio door, she glanced back. Through the crush of bodies, she caught a glimpse of Damian’s silhouette. He had Caleb cornered, pinned low to the ground, Damian’s shoe tilted his chin up with the toe.

She couldn’t hear what he was saying. But she knew the words were a hundred times more vicious than anything Caleb had spat.

As she stepped out of the studio, Caleb’s cries and pleas echoed behind her.

“Damian, have you lost your mind?”

“Damian-let me go. We can talk about this.”

Hearing his desperate begging, Scarlett didn’t feel victorious. She felt uneasy.

She hesitated. Then she ran back and shouted into the studio, “Damian! If you tear that wound open again, don’t ever come see me!”

Then she turned and hurried away.

She didn’t know if he’d heard her.

Right now, Clara and Violet needed her more.

At the hospital, the doctors examined Clara. After a full workup, they confirmed nothing was broken-just some bruising and mild shock.

Scarlett and Violet exhaled at the same time.

The weight in her chest had barely lifted when her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen. Vincent.

Clara was awake now, but she wasn’t speaking. She lay against Violet, staring at nothing.

Scarlett didn’t want to answer. She hung up..

She sat by the bed and kept vigil with Violet.

“Clara. Look at Mommy. Please don’t scare me like this.

“Clara, Auntie’s here too. Didn’t you miss Auntie the most? I’m right here.”

Clara wouldn’t speak. Violet broke down. Seeing her cry, Scarlett couldn’t hold back her own

tears.

Then, suddenly, Clara seemed to snap out of it. As if nothing had happened, she looked at Scarlett, then at Violet. “Mommy, Auntie. I’m okay. Are you okay?”

Hearing her speak, Violet pulled her into a tight hug. “Clara. It’s Mommy’s fault. You got hurt because of me. I’m so sorry.”

Scarlett wrapped her arms around them both. “It’s Auntie’s fault. I couldn’t protect you.”

The three of them held each other, each carrying their own weight.

Clara lifted her small hands and patted theirs gently. “Clara is really okay. Mommy and Auntie don’t need to be sad anymore.”

Even after being hit, she was the one comforting them.

Scarlett and Violet held her tighter, almost too tight.

Finally, Clara whispered, “Mommy, Auntie. I can’t breathe.”

They let go.

They called the doctor again. Requested a consult from pediatric psych. Only after they confirmed Clara had sustained no lasting psychological damage did they finally let themselves

relax.

Violet stayed with Clara. Scarlett stepped out to buy her something to eat.

As she exited the room, she noticed Brett still standing by the door.

When he saw her, he gave a small nod. “Mrs. Langley.”

Scarlett paused, registering the title. She thought about correcting him, then decided against it. If Damian had told them to call her that, arguing wouldn’t change anything.

But thinking of Damian-she hadn’t seen him yet. Unease curled in her chest. “Where’s Damian? Why isn’t he here?”

Brett’s gaze flickered. “Well…”

He hesitated.

Scarlett caught the evasion and was about to press when Damian’s lazy, arrogant voice sounded behind her. “Right here. Miss me already? It’s only been a few hours.”

She turned. He was still in the same black coat, but under the fluorescent lights, his face looked slightly pale.

She ignored his flippant tone and walked straight toward him. “Let me see your wound.”

Damian stepped back. For every step she took forward, he took two back.

“I’m fine. You don’t need to see.”

Her voice hardened. “Damian. Stay right there.”

He actually stopped.

After last time, Scarlett knew that if Damian was avoiding her, it meant his wound had reopened.

When he finally stood still, she closed the distance.

She reached up and lifted the hem of his undershirt.

The fabric rose, revealing his abdomen-taut, bronze, gleaming faintly under the harsh lights.
