But she forced herself to focus. She needed to see the wound.
The corridor was busy. People passed by, glancing. She didn’t care. She kept lifting his shirt.
Damian didn’t resist. In fact, he spread his arms slightly, like he was enjoying it.
He showed himself to her without shame. Completely open.
He noticed the flush creeping up her ears and couldn’t help but laugh. “Baby, if you want to look, if you want to touch-we can take our time when we get home. Look at all these people watching. It’s embarrassing.”
She ignored him. She pushed the shirt higher, up to his chest.
The wound was exposed. Fresh gauze.
But even new, it was already soaked through with red.
She didn’t need to guess. He’d used his fists back at the studio.
Seeing the blood still seeping, her voice came out sharp. “Damian. Do you have a death wish?”
Her eyes were red as she said it.
He looked down at her. He could see she was furious-and terrified.
Seeing her on the verge of tears, he suddenly didn’t know what to do.
“No, baby. I want to live. I haven’t even married you yet. Why would I want to die? I still have so much to do. I’m not stupid enough to throw my life away.”
Scarlett looked up at him, tears spilling down her cheeks. “If you don’t listen to me this time, I swear I’ll never care whether you live or die again.”
Damian agreed immediately. “I’ll listen. From now on, whatever you say, I’ll do it.”
Scarlett held out her hand, her voice thick. “Take my hand. I’ll find a doctor to re-dress your wound.”
Damian obediently took her arm and followed her quick, short strides. “I only want you to see my body. No one else is worthy.”

She said nothing.
But to Damian, her silence was answer enough. She was meeting him halfway.
Maybe she did care about him after all.

At the treatment room, Scarlett used her connections to borrow it. The staff recognized her and let her use the space.
She led Damian inside and began prepping her supplies. “Lie down. Take off your shirt.”
Damian followed her instructions without protest.
When Scarlett turned around, gloves on, Damian was lying on the narrow bed.
His long legs hung off the edge.
She leaned over him and carefully tended to his wound. Disinfected it. Dressed it. Wrapped it neatly.
When she was done, she said, “Finished.”
She busied herself with cleaning up. Organized the instruments. Disposed of the waste. Washed her hands.
Before she could reach for a paper towel, Damian’s chest pressed against her back.
His arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her gently into him.
Her body went rigid. She was afraid of hurting him again, so she didn’t move.
His hands slid from her waist to her stomach, his fingers interlacing with hers.
He rested his chin on her shoulder. His voice was low, rough. “Baby. When will I finally get to have you?”
His breath was hot against her skin. It burned through everything.
His words made her go still.
She let him lean against her. She didn’t dare push him away.
After a long silence, she finally spoke, her voice quiet and hoarse, “Damian. I’m not divorced yet.”
Damian caught the thread of hope beneath her words. “Does that mean-once you’re divorced, I can have you?”

Scarlett realized she’d walked right into his trap. She said nothing.
Just then, her phone rang.
She didn’t check the caller ID. “I need to take this.”
Damian didn’t ask who it was. After a moment, he let her go.
The second he released her, Scarlett slipped out of his arms.
She didn’t look at him. Just waved her phone. “I’m going to answer this.”
She stepped out of the treatment room.
The missed call had already ended. She didn’t call back.
Then Vincent called again.
She hesitated. Then found a somewhat quiet corner and answered.
Vincent’s voice came through, confused. “Luke is in police custody?”
