Firthed

Damian followed, his voice laced with amusement. “You really know my mother pretty well.”

Scarlett said nothing as they waited for the elevator.

Her reflection stared back at her from the polished metal doors. Damian watched her silhouette and smiled, slow and content.

He noticed she was standing a little far from him and edged closer.

His voice drifted down from above her head. “My mom keeps pushing me to get married. What do you think?”

Scarlett kept her eyes on the ascending floor numbers. “You’re at that age. It’s time.”

Damian chuckled. “Exactly. So when you go to file the paperwork in a couple of days, I’ll be right there. ID ready. We’ll get our marriage license immediately. I won’t feel at ease a second longer.”

The elevator hadn’t arrived yet. No one else was behind them. Scarlett turned and looked up at him, her expression serious. “Damian. You and I aren’t possible. In my opinion, Ms. Warren is a good match for you. Same background. Equally accomplished. If you married her, it wouldn’t just be a good fit-it’d be the kind of union everyone celebrates.”

Damian’s face hardened. “No matter how good she is, how could she compare to you?”

Scarlett said, “She does. She surpasses me in every way.”

Damian tongued the inside of his cheek. A wave of fierce, unyielding energy radiated from him. His voice dropped, sharp with restrained anger. “If you keep talking like that, don’t think 1 won’t just take you. I’ve never pretended to be a good man. When I want something, I go after it -by any means necessary. But with you, I’d rather you come to me willingly. But if one day you refuse, I don’t care whose woman you are. I’ll take you anyway.”

Scarlett stared at him, stunned. “Damian…”

He lifted his gaze away from her. The muscles along his jaw were tight. His voice was cold, absolute. “When I say something, I mean it.”

Standing beside him, Scarlett could feel the chill radiating off him.

The elevator arrived.

It was crowded. When they stepped in, Damian pulled her into the circle of his arms.

He shielded her, keeping the strangers around them at a distance.

When they reached the first floor and the crowd dispersed, Damian took her hand and led her

out.

He spotted his car and handed her the keys. “You drive.”

She took them and got into the driver’s seat.

They barely spoke the whole way back.

When the car stopped outside his villa, Scarlett turned to him. “Go inside. I need to head back.”

Damian didn’t move. He turned in the passenger seat and looked at her. “We’re at my door. You sure you don’t want to come in for a bit?”

Scarlett opened the door and stepped out onto the curb. “Violet and Clara are still at the hospital. I’m worried about them. I appreciate it, but I need to go back.”

Hearing that. Damian didn’t push. He let out a soft, light laugh. “Fine. Go take care of things today. Plenty of time for you to come over for coffee later.”

Scarlett didn’t respond. “I’m leaving. You should go inside.”

Damian stood by the car door. “You go first. I’ll watch you get a cab, then I’ll head in.”

It was cold, and he was still injured. Scarlett didn’t want him standing out there. She flagged down a taxi.

As she gave the driver the address, Damian silently memorized the license plate.

Before the cab could pull away, Scarlett’s phone rang with a FaceTime call.

She glanced at the screen. A group call from her college roommates.

She hesitated, then answered.

Damian was still standing by the taxi window, speaking to the driver about getting Scarlett safely to her destination.

When he was done, he turned back to her. “Text me when you get to the hospital. If I don’t hear from you, I’m calling the police.”

Scarlett knew Damian never made empty threats. She nodded. “Okay.”

The driver stepped on the gas.

On Scarlett’s screen, Melinda, Grace White, and Catherine Green were waiting.

As the taxi pulled away, Damian’s worried face flickered briefly across her frame.

The cold wind whipped through the cracked window, stirring Scarlett’s hair.

She held up her phone, her gaze still directed outside. “I’m leaving.”

Damian said, “Okay.”

As the car drove off, his face accidentally appeared in the video.
