Chapter 518 A Familiar Face

Scarlett finally turned her attention back to the call.

Grace, the resident gossip of the dorm, saw Scarlett was still out and immediately pounced. “Scarlett, who was that?”

Only Melinda knew Scarlett was married.

Grace and Catherine still thought she was single.

All these years, the secret had held.

Scarlett answered Grace’s question. “Just a friend.”

Grace tilted her head, studying Scarlett through the screen. “He seemed really worried. Is that your boyfriend? Also, he’s really good-looking.”

Scarlett shook her head. “No, really. Just a friend.”

Grace backed off with a grin. “Okay, okay. Whatever you say.”

Then Catherine, who had been quiet, suddenly spoke, “Actually, that guy looked kind of familiar.”

At that, Grace chimed in, “Yeah, now that you mention it.”

Damian came from old money, but he rarely appeared in the press. Scarlett’s roommates all came from regular backgrounds-they probably didn’t follow business news. Why did he look familiar to them?

Melinda cut in, “You think so too?”

Catherine and Grace nodded in unison. “Yeah.”

Scarlett had the same feeling, but she couldn’t place it.

After a pause, she said, “Maybe he just has one of those faces.”

The question of Damian’s familiarity was quickly forgotten.

Grace pouted. “It’s been years since we graduated, and we never see each other. We should plan a reunion.”

Catherine, the gentlest of the four, agreed quietly. “Yes.”

Melinda seemed a bit distracted. “I’m free whenever.”

Then all eyes turned to Scarlett.

She thought for a moment. “How about this weekend?”

The weekend reunion was settled. After a few more casual exchanges, they ended the call.

No sooner had Scarlett put down her phone than another message came through.

She glanced at it. A private message from Melinda.

“Scarlett. How do you know Damian?”

Reading the question, Scarlett thought hard.

How did she know Damian?

During her marriage to Vincent, she used to secretly track his schedule and tail him to events.

At one such event, she was turned away at the door-no invitation. Damian had appeared out of nowhere and claimed she was his plus-one.

Back then, Damian was exactly as he was now. One look and she could tell he was trouble. Smooth. A player.

That was the first time Scarlett saw him. But he had acted as if he already knew her, called her by name, easy and familiar.

From that day on, Damian had become a constant presence.

Scarlett didn’t know how to answer Melinda’s question.

After a moment, she typed, “Honestly? I don’t really know either.”

Melinda sent a question mark.

Scarlett asked, “Does he look familiar to you too?”

Melinda said, “Yeah. You know me-I never remember anything. Even if he looks familiar, I can’t place it.”

Scarlett was equally puzzled. She turned her gaze out the window.

Rivergate at night was beautiful. The bridge lights strung across the river like pearls.

An endless sea of lights stretched into the distance.

And then, Scarlett remembered something.

She remembered that Melinda had once pulled someone out of the river during their junior year. Back then, Melinda was still a student. She was terrified she’d done something wrong- that the man would die. After the ambulance came, she spent months in anxiety, replaying the

moment.

It had taken her a long time to calm down.

Scarlett still remembered Melinda asking a bystander to take a photo of the rescue, just so she could prove she’d helped, not harmed.

When no one came after her, Melinda eventually showed the photo to her roommates.

Now, trying to recall that image, Scarlett only remembered chaos. A crowd. A man on the ground, his face covered in blood-only a vague outline visible.

Now that she thought about it, the outline did resemble Damian.

If that were true, could Damian be the man Melinda had saved?

But if so, why had he mistaken Scarlett for his rescuer?

Maybe Damian wasn’t that man.

After a long silence, she replied to Melinda, “Let’s talk this weekend. With everyone together, it might be easier to remember.”

She figured, whether Damian was that man or not, she’d bring up Melinda’s rescue story at the

reunion.

If everyone agreed the man in the photo was Damian, then it was almost certainly him.

After Scarlett’s taxi disappeared from view, Damian finally walked through the villa gates.

In the living room, Ruth was curled up on the couch, watching TV.
