At the sound of the door, she barely lifted her eyes. “Oh, you finally remember you have a home?”

Damian walked over and sank onto the sofa, leaning back in exhaustion.

His chest wound wasn’t healed, and he’d been running around all day.

He lifted his shirt to check. The gauze was soaked through again.

Ruth moved closer, her eyes softening as she looked at it. “If you’re going to protect someone, shouldn’t you at least take care of yourself first?”

Damian buttoned his shirt and smirked lightly. “It’s nothing. Just a scratch.”

Ruth gave him a look. “Bleeding this much means you overdid it and tore it open again, didn’t you?”

Catching her implication, Damian played along. “How did

you know?”

Ruth’s eyes lit up. “What? Did you make some progress?”

Damian narrowed his eyes and shook his head. “Not yet.”

Ruth’s voice rose. “What? Still nothing?”

Damian nodded, a faint smile curving his lips. He raised an eyebrow. “Slow and steady.”

Ruth turned away. “You’re overthinking it.”

Damian shrugged. “I’m in no hurry.”

Ruth said, “I am. I want grandchildren. You two give me a couple of kids, then you can do whatever you want, go wherever you want.”

Damian smiled. “Mom. It’ll happen.”

Ruth huffed. “I started embroidering that wedding dress years ago. It’s been sitting in the closet forever, and you still haven’t locked her down. If you don’t hurry up, I’m going to lose my

mind.”

Damian closed his eyes briefly. His voice was rough. “I’m trying.”

Ruth glared at him. “If you’d just be more aggressive, you’d have her by now.”

Damian opened his eyes-red-rimmed, exhausted—and turned to her with a gentle smile. “Mom. She’s different. I want to earn my way into her heart. I want her to marry me because she wants to.”

Ruth waved a hand. “Unbelievable. I’m not some romantic. How did I raise such a hopeless one?”

Damian smiled, his expression soft, almost dreamy. “Caught in the web of love. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Ruth stood up. “Save that poetry for her. I’m done with you. I’m going to figure out how to deal with Amanda. That woman keeps running her mouth about my future daughter-in-law. I want to tear her apart.”

At the mention of Amanda, Damian’s smile faded. His voice dropped. “She hit Scarlett, too.”

Ruth rolled up her sleeves, all traces of refinement gone. “Don’t worry. You handle the rest. I’ve wanted to go after that harpy for years.”

Damian looked at her, gratitude flickering in his eyes. “Thanks, Mom.”

Ruth’s gaze softened. “Whoever you choose, I’ll do everything I can to protect them.”

Damian smiled. “Scarlett’s a good person. You and her-you’re the two most important people in my life.”

Ruth said, “When it comes to your wife, don’t say things like that. Put her first. Always.”

By the time Scarlett returned to the hospital, a light rain was falling, carried on a sharp wind.

She jogged the whole way inside.

When she reached the ward, Clara was already asleep.

Seeing Scarlett’s damp clothes, Violet immediately grabbed a towel and began drying her hair.

Scarlett took the towel. “Violet, I can do it.”

Violet smiled and let go, watching her gently. “I thought you weren’t coming back tonight.”

Scarlett caught the implication and protested. “Violet.”

Violet’s face was warm. “Scarlett, I know what you’re thinking. You feel like you can’t get close to someone else because you’re still technically married. But what about Vincent? Has he ever considered your feelings?”

Scarlett clutched the towel, looking at her. “Violet, it’s not about being faithful to anyone. Vincent and I are done. And Damian and I-we’re not from the same world.”

Violet frowned, her voice gentle but firm. “Isn’t that what every woman wants? A safe harbor? Someone to come home to? Damian treats you well. You won’t regret choosing him.”

Scarlett said, “We’ll see.”

Sensing Scarlett was wavering, Violet pressed on. “Scarlett. A woman needs affection. I think you should give Damian a chance. See how it feels. If it’s right, you move forward. But if you wait until you’re already emotionally invested to find out if there’s even chemistry-what if it’s not there?”

Clara’s ears perked up, her face turning pink. Scarlett glanced at her, embarrassed. “Violet. Clara’s right here. She might hear.”
