Chapter 521 A Hidden Bruise

Nolan’s words echoed in her head. Thank Scarlett.
Had Nolan only agreed to do the surgery because of her?
She was still turning it over in her mind when the elevator doors behind them slid open.
Maria stepped out, Vanessa beside her.
The moment the doors parted, Vanessa ran forward. “Daddy…”
She threw herself at Vincent, wrapping both arms around his leg.
Vincent looked down and gently stroked her hair. “What’s wrong?”
Vanessa usually clung to Sabrina. This time, she’d run straight to him.

Sensing something was off, Vincent crouched and took her hand. That’s when he noticed the bruise on the back of it.
“Vanessa. Tell Daddy how this happened.” His face shifted, concern bleeding through.
Sabrina glanced at Vanessa’s hand, then shot a look at Maria.
Maria, hearing Vincent’s question, answered quickly, “She fell.”
Vincent didn’t look at her. He kept his eyes on Vanessa. “Is that true?”
Vanessa nodded, her little face pinched with something that looked like guilt. “Yes. It was my fault. I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
Vincent’s jaw tightened. He took her hand gently. “Let Daddy blow on it.”
Vanessa held it out.
He blew softly over the bruise. “Does it hurt?”
Vanessa nodded. “Yes.”
Her eyes were wet.
Vincent pulled her into his arms and rubbed her back in slow circles.
Vanessa rested her head on his shoulder, her voice small. “Daddy, when can we go home?”

Vincent pulled back slightly to look at her. “Do you miss Mommy?”
Vanessa shook her head. “I miss school.”
He cupped her face. “We’ll go back the day after tomorrow. First thing in the morning.”
Finally, Vanessa smiled. “Okay. I want to sleep with Daddy tonight.”
Vincent didn’t hesitate. “Okay.”
Normally, he’d have her sleep alone or with Sabrina.
Tonight, he didn’t refuse.

While Vincent comforted Vanessa, Sabrina turned to Maria and said quietly. “Mom. Come with
She led the way to the stairwell. Maria followed without a word.
Once they were inside, Sabrina asked, “Where’s Caleb? Why isn’t he here?”
Maria said. “He’s been busy. I told him not to come. Work comes first.”
After inquiring about her brother, Sabrina got straight to the point. “Did you hit her again?”
Maria’s voice was flat, unapologetic. “Yes. She kept crying, said she wanted to see you. I told her you were busy, that you were with your father. She wouldn’t stop. I couldn’t take it anymore.”
Sabrina frowned. “Vincent is still here. You need to control yourself. What if she tells him?”
Maria was confident. “Don’t worry. She wouldn’t dare.”
Sabrina was uneasy. “What if he finds out on his own?”
Maria relented. “Fine. I’ll be more careful. Next time, I won’t hit her hands. I’ll leave marks where they don’t show.”
Sabrina nodded. “Okay.”
They stepped back out.
Vanessa was still teary. Sabrina crouched in front of her. “Vanessa. Come here. Let Sabrina give you a hug.”
Vanessa couldn’t resist the softness in her voice. She reached out.
Sabrina lifted her into her arms and pressed her forehead gently against Vanessa’s. “What’s

Vanessa wrapped her arms around Sabrina’s neck and shook her head. “No.”

Sabrina said, “When I finish everything here, Daddy and I will take you to the amusement park. Okay?”
Vanessa nodded. “Okay.”
But her body gave a small tremor as she remembered Maria’s hand coming down on hers.
Still, she told herself, Maria is Maria. Sabrina is good to me. She would never hit me.
That night, back at the hotel.
Vincent saw how exhausted Sabrina was-she hadn’t slept properly in days-so he didn’t ask her to stay with Vanessa.
Sabrina insisted a few times, offered to bathe Vanessa, but in the end, she couldn’t overrule
him.
In the room, Vincent ran the bath and let Vanessa wash herself.
When she came out in her pajamas, she climbed onto his bed.
She nestled into the crook of his arm, her voice soft, drowsy. “Daddy, will you only ever have me as your kid?”
Vincent lowered his tablet and turned to look at her. “Why do
you
ask?”
