Hearing that, Scarlett stood up from the bench, her voice rising before she could stop it. “Then when can you come back?”
She was loud enough that a few couples waiting for marriage certificates turned to look.
She didn’t care. She needed an answer.
Vincent said, “It’s Friday. I’ll be back Monday.”
She refused immediately. “No.”
His voice cooled. “Then when do you want me to come?”
Scarlett said, “Start driving now. We can go this afternoon.”
Vincent was silent. She pressed on. “Vincent. This can’t keep dragging out.”
“Okay. I’ll try to make it back.”
Scarlett said, “We’ve been married for years. Consider everything I’ve done for this family. Consider this me begging you.”
She had waited too long for this.
She couldn’t bear to see it fall apart at the last moment.
Even if it meant begging, she would do it.
Vincent said, “Okay. I understand.”
She swallowed her anger and tried to steady herself.
He said he’d try. That was something.
It was still early. From Nebula City to Rivergate was only a few hours’ drive.
If he left now, he could make it by afternoon.
After hanging up, Scarlett watched the people in the lobby.
Young couples, radiant, here to get married. Couples dressed up, taking photos, posting on social media. And couples tearing each other apart over divorces.
In this wide lobby, Scarlett watched it all play out around her.

She sat on the bench. She didn’t leave. She waited.

She waited until noon. When the staff broke for lunch, she stepped out for a bit.
Before the afternoon session started, she was back in the lobby.
She sat down again and called Vincent.
He answered, “What is it?”
Her chest tightened. “Where are you?”
He didn’t elaborate. “On my way.”
She didn’t press. “Okay. I’m at the courthouse. I’m waiting for you.”
She hung up and went back to staring at her phone screen.
Watching the minutes tick by.
The closer it got to closing time, the more it felt like he wasn’t coming.
She called him twice more. Both times, he answered. Both times, he said, “Almost there.”
At 4:58 PM, Vincent still hadn’t appeared.
A staff member approached her. “Miss, we’re about to close. It’s Friday. If you have business, please come back on the next business day.”
Scarlett looked up, anxious. “Just wait a little longer. He’s coming.”
The staff member sighed. “Okay.”
Scarlett watched the entrance for two more minutes.
5:01. The staff began to leave.
She had no choice. She walked out just as the doors were being locked.
She turned back. The glass doors were shut tight.
Scarlett stood on the steps, stunned.
She didn’t know where to go. Didn’t know what to do.
Her phone screen was empty. No messages. No missed calls. She let out a cold, quiet laugh.

Just hours ago, she had actually believed he would come.
She stood there for a long time. When she finally turned to leave, her gaze caught Vincent’s car pulling up to the curb.
He barely had time to park before he got out.
It was winter. Just past five, and the sky was already dark.
Scarlett stood on the steps, her eyes hollow. She said to the man walking toward her, “You’re late.”
Her voice was eerily calm. No anger. No accusation.
Hearing her say that, something in Vincent’s chest pulled tight.
He stepped onto the bottom step and stood in front of her. His face was full of guilt. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be late.”
Scarlett didn’t look at him. Didn’t acknowledge him. She stepped down.
He grabbed her arm. “Say something.”
She snapped. She struggled against his grip, her voice rising. “Let go of me!”
