The moment she yelled, her eyes reddened. Tears spilled over, streaming down her face before she could stop them.
Vincent saw her crying. He let go.
Scarlett’s emotions unraveled completely. She looked at him, her voice breaking. “Why won’t you just let me go?”
Vincent’s jaw tightened. “Monday. I won’t be late on Monday.”
She didn’t respond. She gave him one last glare, then turned and walked down the steps.
The night wind was cold, biting. Her coat billowed behind her. Her silhouette looked small, alone.
Vincent stood on the steps and watched her until she disappeared around the corner. Then he finally looked away.

Just as Scarlett rounded the corner, her phone rang. Melinda.
“Scarlett, are you free right now?”
Her voice was hoarse. “Yeah.”
Melinda said, “Let’s meet up tonight. It’s Saturday tomorrow-everyone can sleep in.”
Scarlett was in no state to think. She agreed without hesitation. “Okay. Send me the address. I’ll head over now.”
Melinda said, “Okay.”
A moment later, a pin dropped in their chat.
Scarlett followed it and took a cab.
When she arrived, Melinda, Grace, and Catherine were already there.
A fondue place. They’d booked a private room.
After a round of greetings, they started eating.
Grace suggested drinks. Everyone agreed.

Two beers in, Scarlett’s mood began to lift.
She turned to look at Melinda. Melinda was looking back at her.
Their eyes met. Both silent.
Remembering her promise to talk when they met, Scarlett brought it up. “Melinda. Do you still remember that guy you saved on the bridge during junior year?”
At the mention, Grace and Catherine stopped chatting.
Before Melinda could answer, Grace jumped in. “Oh my god. Now that Scarlett mentions it, that guy we saw in her video the other day-he looks exactly like the guy in the photo Melinda showed us.”
Melinda’s face shifted. Recognition flickered across it.
Catherine asked, “Melinda, do you still have that photo? Let’s see.”
Melinda shook her head. “That photo’s long gone. But now that you mention it… yeah. I’m pretty sure it’s him.”
Scarlett listened to her roommates chatter and stayed quiet.
So Damian’s story-that she had saved him-was true. But the one who saved him wasn’t her. It was Melinda.
All of Damian’s kindness. His attention. His persistence. It was never meant for her.
She had just been standing in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Her chest tightened. She didn’t know why it bothered her so much. She picked up her glass and drank.
When it was empty, she opened another.
Two bottles in, her head started to spin.
Grace, Melinda, and Catherine noticed the shift in her mood.
They looked at her, concerned. “Scarlett? You okay?”
Her nose stung. She shook her head. “I’m fine.”
She said it, but their gazes lingered.

Melinda’s expression had grown complicated.

That year. The bridge. A car accident. She was a med student, and someone was screaming, “Is there a doctor? Please, someone help!”
Melinda hadn’t wanted to get involved. But the desperation in that voice cracked something in her.
She put on a mask, got out of the car, pushed through the crowd.
She crouched beside the injured man and started CPR.
His face was covered in blood. She could barely make out his features, let alone what he looked like.
But his build. His coat. The watch on his wrist. She could tell he wasn’t ordinary.
She didn’t think about any of that. She just wanted to save him.
Then his fingers moved. His voice came out hoarse. “It hurts. You’re pressing too hard.”
She stopped immediately. “Sorry. I’m still a student. I don’t really know how to…”
His voice, even rougher now, cut through. “Your voice is beautiful. You must be beautiful too.”
Melinda froze. Who asks that when they’re bleeding out?
But she answered. “No. I’m not.”
He smiled. His face was covered in blood, only his teeth showing. Even so, his features were striking.
