Vincent was caught off guard by Vanessa's comment. He hesitated for a moment, then instead of responding directly, asked with a slight note of confusion, "Hey, what about going to Nebula City to see Sabrina?"

Vanessa shook her head, her lips forming a little pout. "No, I don't."

Vincent frowned slightly, confused. "But I thought you liked Sabrina more than anyone. Why don't you want to see her?"

Vanessa dropped her gaze, her expression shifting. "I do like her, but—"

She almost let it slip. Almost told him about how Maria had been treating her.

But the words caught in her throat, and she swallowed them back down.

Because if she said anything, Maria might make sure Sabrina stopped talking to her altogether.

That scared her. So she stayed quiet.

Vincent caught the unfinished sentence and raised an eyebrow. "What is it?"

Vanessa forced a smile and wrapped her small hands around his arm. "Nothing, Dad."

He didn't push. Instead, he reached out and gently ruffled her hair. "It's still early. Why don't I have Grandma come take you out for a little while?"

Vanessa nodded. "Okay."

Vincent called Amanda, and not long after, she arrived.

Truth be told, Amanda didn't have particularly strong feelings for her granddaughter. What she'd really wanted was a grandson.

But since Vanessa was Vincent's daughter, Amanda never gave her a hard time—though she didn't exactly go out of her way to show affection either.
