Just then, Zachary spoke up, trying to break the silence. "Hey, everyone's being awfully quiet. What's on your minds?"
Nobody answered him.
Seeing that no one was biting, he decided to get specific. "Felix, what are you thinking about?"
Felix's voice came out flat, maybe even a little cold. "I'm figuring out how we're splitting up the tents later."
Zachary let out a short laugh. "Seriously? We've got a view like this right in front of us, and you're worried about something that trivial?"
Felix shot back, "Just don't come crying to me later when you want to bunk together."
Zachary waved him off with a dismissive sound before turning his attention to Damian. "Alright, what about you? What's going on in that head of yours?"
Damian had his hands folded behind his head, eyes fixed on the sky full of stars. When he finally answered, his voice came out rough. "I'm pretty shallow, honestly. My mind's in the gutter. If I'm being real, I'm also thinking about how to divide up the tents."
Zachary's expression soured, and he muttered in mild frustration, "With friends like you two, it's no wonder I can't hold my head up in public."
Damian didn't miss a beat. "Which head are we talking about?"
Zachary lowered his voice quickly, glancing around. "Claire's right there—can you not?"
Damian didn't respond, just let the moment pass.
After the awkwardness faded, Zachary turned to Scarlett, curious. "What about you? What were you thinking?"
Scarlett took a slow breath and managed a small smile. "Nothing, really."
But that wasn't true. Her mind had been stuck on Melinda and Damian all day.
She just couldn't bring it up now, so she carried it quietly.
Zachary didn't push. He thought about asking Claire the same thing, but he didn't want to risk upsetting her, so he let it go.
Claire, though, spoke up on her own, "I was thinking about the future. About all of us. I really believe that everyone here is going to have happy lives. Really happy."
Zachary nodded along. "Yeah. Really happy."
Once the conversation started flowing, it didn't stop. They talked about work, traded funny stories, caught up on gossip...
Before anyone realized it, the clock had crept past eleven.
Up on the mountain, the temperature dropped fast at night. Worried they'd all catch colds, Zachary finally suggested, "Alright, let's call it. We'll catch the sunrise together tomorrow."
With three tents set up, the question of who slept where became the next topic.
Scarlett ventured carefully, "Maybe Claire and I can share one, and you guys can figure out the other two?"
Damian was quick to shut that down. "You're with me. Zachary and Felix can bunk together. Ms. Wright gets her own."
He laid it out like it was already decided, his tone firm.
