Scarlett held Damian's gaze, those deep eyes fixed on her, and started again. "Damian, that day on the bridge..."
Before she could finish, Damian shifted suddenly, rolling over and pinning her beneath him.
He leaned down, his large frame casting a shadow that completely enveloped her, a playful smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "You know what people usually do at this hour, right?"
Scarlett tried to squirm out from under him, but he was injured. She didn't want to hurt him, which unfortunately meant she couldn't exactly shove him off.
So she settled for glaring up at him. "What are people supposed to do?"
Damian dipped his head, burying his face next to hers, his lips brushing against her ear as he whispered, "Fool around."
He drew the words out slowly, letting them hang there, deliberately suggestive.
Scarlett knew he was messing with her. She snapped, "Get off me!"
As she said it, she pushed at him again.
The next second, Damian let out an involuntary sharp breath. "Shit—"
Hearing that, Scarlett's expression shifted immediately. "Are you okay?"
Worry and panic were written all over her face.
Seeing her flustered like that, Damian broke into a grin, the corners of his mouth curving up. "Kidding."
Scarlett was livid. Her voice rose. "Get up. Let's sit and talk like normal people."
Damian didn't budge. "Only if you promise it's not something that's gonna piss me off."
Scarlett kept struggling. "I can't promise that."
"Then we're not talking about it."
She caught the flicker of something in his eyes—uncertainty, maybe even fear. Like he already knew.
So she decided not to drag it out any longer. "I know who really saved you back then."
The smile dropped from Damian's face. His voice went low. "You're telling me that woman you pushed on me—the one who keeps trying to add me—is the one?"
Scarlett nodded. "Yes."
Damian's hand tightened around her arm, grip unconsciously firming. His voice came out strained, almost like he was grinding his teeth. "You'd make something like that up just to get rid of me?"
Scarlett looked him straight in the eye, her face completely serious. "It's the truth."
Damian turned his head away sharply, voice rising. "I don't believe you."
She tried to say more, but he didn't want to hear it. He turned back and crushed his mouth against hers, rough, demanding.

You can't say for sure about things that never happened.
