Without even meaning to, Evelyn let out that same alluring aura she always seemed to carry.
But in the very next instant, Vincent's expression went cold. "I'll remember that," he said flatly.
Then, without another glance her way, he turned to Sabrina. "Let's go, Sabrina."
He took Sabrina's hand, then reached toward Vanessa. "Come on."
Vanessa hopped over and took his hand, grinning. "Daddy's being so nice to Sabrina. You haven't even promised to take me shopping for cute outfits lately."
"Next time," Vincent replied.
Vanessa put on a pretend pout. "Daddy's always busy. Who knows when 'next time' will be."
Sabrina leaned toward her gently. "Be good, Vanessa. Daddy has a lot of work. How about from now on, I take you shopping for pretty clothes, okay?"
Vanessa let go of Vincent's hand, skipped around, and grabbed Sabrina's instead. "Yes! Thank you, Sabrina! I love you the most!"
On their way out of the mall, Vincent didn't say another word.
It wasn't until they stepped outside that he abruptly released Sabrina's hand. Turning to her, he said, "I need to make a call."
Sabrina looked a little confused but nodded. "Okay."
Vincent walked toward a secluded corner of the building.
Once he was gone, Vanessa tugged at Sabrina's sleeve. "Sabrina, I want that balloon over there."
Sabrina glanced down, a flicker of irritation rising in her chest, but she pushed it down and managed a smile. "Sure, pick whichever one you like. I'll get it for you."
Thrilled, Vanessa hurried over to the vendor.
Sabrina watched the little girl's joyful figure and couldn't help thinking that once she and Vincent had a child of their own, she'd pay far less attention to Vanessa.
That child would grow up and take everything that should have been Vanessa's.
The thought sent a quiet thrill of anticipation through her. She couldn't wait for that day to come.
In the shadowy corner of the mall, Vincent lit a cigarette, pulled out his phone, and called Abbott.
When Abbott picked up, Vincent's command was clear and cold. "Fire Evelyn from Blossom Mall. Then put the word out—no upscale retailer is to hire her. Ever."
Abbott was taken aback. He'd never seen Vincent go this far with anyone. "Mr. Stewart, if I may... what happened?"
"Just handle it," Vincent cut in, not interested in explaining.
Abbott hesitated only a second. "Understood. I'll take care of it immediately."
