Sitting on Nathan's lap, Clara felt unexpectedly secure. She glanced over at Scarlett and asked with curiosity, "Auntie, how come Uncle Damian didn't come today?"
Over the past few days, Damian had been in and out of Theron Manor so often that Clara had grown used to seeing him around—so much so that she'd begun to wonder if he was moving in for good.
But tonight, there was no sign of him.
When Scarlett heard Clara asking about Damian, she softened her tone and explained, "He walked me to the door and then headed home."
Clara looked puzzled. "Home? To where? Isn't this his home now?"
Scarlett was caught off guard by the question and shot a pleading look toward Violet for help.
Catching the glance, Violet quickly stepped in. "Clara, Damian has his own place right now. Once Auntie marries him, then this will be his home, too."
Clara didn't quite grasp what "marries" meant. All she knew was that Damian wasn't here, and that left her a little disappointed.
She lowered her gaze and said sadly, "Oh. I was hoping after we got back, Damian could help me build a snowman."
Scarlett offered a gentle smile. "There will be plenty of chances later, Clara."
Clara's spirits lifted. "Okay, I'll take your word for it, Auntie."
Then she slid off Nathan's lap and hurried over to Scarlett.
Wrapping her arms around Scarlett, she said, "Auntie, bend down a sec."
Scarlett leaned forward slightly, and Clara planted a soft kiss on her cheek. "I'm gonna go play upstairs now, okay?"
With that, Clara pattered up the stairs, her footsteps echoing lightly through the hall.
The family settled in the living room, a pot of coffee simmering quietly by the fireplace.
Nathan had set his work aside for the evening—it wasn't often they all had a chance to sit together like this.
Noticing Scarlett had lost weight and seemed preoccupied, Nathan couldn't help asking, "How's your leg feeling these days?"
"It's much better," Scarlett replied. "It's just the cold weather—makes me hesitant to go out much."
Nathan nodded thoughtfully. "If you're uncomfortable turning down Damian's invitations, I can talk to him. Tell him to ease up on taking you out in this chill. The more cold air you get, the more it'll act up, and you're the one who ends up suffering."
Scarlett smiled softly but declined his offer. "I appreciate it, but I know how to handle it, brother."
Hearing her defend Damian, Nathan didn't press further.
Then, as if suddenly remembering something, he asked, "What about the divorce, then?"
"Vincent won't agree to it privately, so we've decided to go through the courts."
