Seeing her like that, Damian clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles went white.
If she hadn't been Scarlett's daughter, he would've laid into her right then and there—no doubt about it.
Scarlett was halfway out the room when she couldn't hold back any longer.
She turned around, walked back to the bedside, and said to Vanessa, "You're not a little kid anymore, Vanessa. You've got to learn to take care of yourself. Once your dad and Sabrina get married, you'll need to be even more independent. They'll have their own family someday, and they won't always be able to—"
Before she could finish, Vanessa snapped, "Would you stop making things up? Sabrina would never do that!"
Scarlett didn't feel like explaining further. She just said quietly, "Just get some rest, drink plenty of fluids, and I'll head out now."
With that, she turned and left the room.
Damian caught up to her in the hall and slipped an arm around her shoulders. "When we have kids someday," he said, a hint of teasing in his voice, "ours will be our little princess, won't she?"
Scarlett heard him but didn't respond.
She knew Damian had said it loud enough for Vanessa to hear, so she didn't bother arguing.
From her bed, Vanessa overheard Damian's remark. Furious, she swiped her arm across the nightstand, sending everything crashing to the floor.
Lily stood frozen nearby, completely at a loss for words.
Vanessa glared toward the doorway and yelled after them, "You're the worst mom ever! I don't have a mother like you!"
Even though Scarlett heard the outburst, she didn't look back.
Within moments, both she and Damian had disappeared from view.
Vanessa then turned to Lily, her voice shaky but demanding. "Give me your phone. I need to call my daddy."
Lily handed it over without a word, and Vanessa snatched it up.
She dialed Vincent's number. It rang several times before he finally picked up.
Before he could even say hello, Vanessa blurted out, "Daddy... will you always love me?"
Vincent had just finished breakfast and was about to help clear the table when the call came through.
Hearing Vanessa's trembling question, he was puzzled but replied gently, "Of course I will, sweetheart. Always."
