Vincent gave a slow nod. "Alright."
Sabrina and Maria brought the breakfast they'd prepared over to the table. There was oatmeal, scrambled eggs with turkey sausage, hash browns, toasted bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and spinach-feta turnovers...
The table was covered with dishes—a full, hearty spread, all homemade from scratch. Maria and Sabrina had woken up early to put it all together.
As they ate together, Maria picked up a breakfast sandwich and set it on the small plate in front of Vincent. At the same time, she spoke softly, "Vincent, you and Sabrina have known each other for years now. There's something I've been wondering whether I should bring up."
Vincent put down his fork. He turned toward Maria and replied politely, "Go ahead."
Since he'd said that, Maria spoke plainly. "Sabrina is twenty-six now. She's not getting any younger. If the two of you are serious about each other, maybe it's time our families met and we made some formal arrangements."
Hearing that, Vincent went quiet.
He'd already decided before coming here that he would marry Sabrina.
But now, hearing Maria actually voice it out loud, he still felt a tug of hesitation.
Vincent lowered his gaze and didn't speak for a long moment.
Under the table, Sabrina gently nudged his leg. "Vincent."
She murmured a quiet prompt, signaling him to respond.
Vincent glanced at Sabrina, then finally said to Maria, "Okay."
Even though part of him resisted, he still agreed.
Sabrina had stood by him all these years. She deserved to have things made official.
Noticing Vincent's hesitation, Maria asked carefully, "Vincent... do you really care for Sabrina?"
Vincent said, "Yes, I do."
Hearing that, Maria smiled. "Then we'll move forward as I suggested?"
This time, Vincent didn't pause. "Alright. Whatever you think is best, Mrs. Monroe."
Relieved, Maria nodded. "Good. Now, please—eat up, make yourself at home."
Halfway through the meal, Maria spoke up again. "The holidays are just around the corner. Maybe then our families could get together, settle the engagement, and plan the wedding. Once that's done, we'd feel much better about entrusting Sabrina to you."
At those words, Vincent suddenly found his breakfast tasteless. Still, even though it felt like chewing cardboard, he replied, "Okay. Whatever you say, Mrs. Monroe."
Vincent's appetite was gone. He looked down and idly scrolled through his phone. Without really thinking, he opened his messages with Scarlett.
He tapped into the thread, hesitated a moment, then typed, "How's Vanessa feeling?"
He didn't expect a reply, but surprisingly, a photo came through pretty quickly.
It showed Vanessa sleeping soundly, her cheeks flushed with color.
After studying the picture, Vincent typed again, "Thanks for looking after her."
