Scarlett stayed quiet for a few seconds before shaking her head and deciding to drop the subject altogether.

Once her thoughts settled, she remembered Claire had called for a reason, so she asked, "You called me earlier—was there something you needed?"

"Yeah," Claire said. "I want you to come with me to an event. The platform I post my videos on invited me. That's where I make my income, so I really should show up."

Scarlett agreed without a second thought. "Sure, I'll go with you."

They talked a little longer before ending the call.

Almost out of habit, Scarlett opened her text thread with Damian. There were still no new messages from him.

She even wondered if her signal had been weak and she'd missed something, so she toggled between Wi-Fi and cellular a couple of times.

But the result was the same: Damian hadn't texted.

Assuming she wouldn't hear from him that night, Scarlett got up and shut the window.

She had just slipped into bed when her phone buzzed.

Without thinking, she reached for it—and sure enough, it was Damian.

She answered almost instantly. "Hey?"

Her voice even carried a hint of excitement.

Damian's tone was gentle on the other end. "Were you asleep?"

Scarlett's eyes warmed right away. She shook her head, then realizing he couldn't see her, quickly said, "Just about to."

Damian picked up on the slight strain in her voice. "Have you been crying?"

She held back. "No," she answered softly. "How are you holding up? Everything okay?"

He let out a low chuckle. "What's going to happen to me? Don't worry. Other people are the ones with problems."

Even though he always brushed it off like that, he wasn't invincible. Scarlett still felt uneasy. "You sure?"

"I'm sure," Damian reassured her. "Try not to worry so much."

"Mm," Scarlett murmured. Then he added, "Just eat well and rest up. I'll come see you soon."

"Damian," she spoke up quickly, sensing the call might be ending soon.

"Yeah?"

"What are you planning to do?"
